Back in 1994, Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis (Lynn), writers on the Beavis and Butt-head series, felt they needed to add a female presence to the series.
Daria was named after a real girl who ended up with the nickname of "diarrhea," the nom-de-plume of choice for her by the two Bs also.
Daria proved to be a popular gal among the Beavis and Butt-head audience, so Glenn and Lynn decided to pitch the idea of giving her her own series.

During first season, five episodes were written by Glenn Eichler, and three by Anne Bernsetin.
Glenn anchored the series (first and last episodes), but the low presence of series-established writers made itself painfully obvious (and is as good an explanation as any as to why everyone seemed to be out of character so often).
I find myself hoping that most of those writers never get another chance at an episode, something I doubt is the case.

Daria was born, and when B&B ended, Eichler and Susie Lewis pitched the "Daria" show to MTV.
