Glenn Frankel: No question that being around South Africans was a marvelous experience that caused me to think hard about my own sense of race relations and my own obligations.

Frankel focuses on the crucial events of the early 1960s, when at least to some opponents of apartheid, it appeared as if fissures were about to appear in the Afrikaner regime and a biracial South Africa was ready to emerge.
Frankel says it was precisely their perceived marginality that led the activists to identify with the ultimate outcasts--South African fls.
Frankel does not hesitate to point out that these people were also among the most dedicated followers of the pro-Soviet line in the Cold War.

In his story, "Sneers From Across the Atlantic" (Feb. 11, 2003), Washington Post London correspondent Glenn Frankel notes that based on opinion polls, critics and analysts, some of America's closest allies, including France, Germany and Britain, are distancing themselves from U.S. policies.
Frankel, who has been with The Washington Post since 1979, spent nine years as a foreign correspondent in Southern Africa, Jerusalem and London and served as deputy national editor and a reporter on the investigative staff.

Glenn Frankel's contribution weaves the threads of some of these stories into a seamless, graphic and elegant tapestry which, by focusing on the experience of a handful of people, starkly reflects the human cost of the fight for a democratic South Africa.
It is a story which highlights the debt owed by those who now enjoy the benefits of the victory in that fight to those who fought it, many of whom did not live to see the rewards of their sacrifice.
Hilda and Rusty Bernstein are central to Frankel's story, which focuses largely on three couples and their families - Bernsteins, Wolpes and Slovos - all Jews, all middle-class whites.

Frankel's kaleidoscopic style sometimes slows things down, and he could have done more to explore the group's reflections on the new South Africa they helped build.
The story is propelled by his own cogent assessments, by his deep respect for these activists and by his ruminations on the extraordinarily charged moral choices these people made and what their decisions cost them (in any number of ways, including family relationships, imprisonment and exile).
Frankel, a former South Africa bureau chief for the Washington Post, was also the winner of the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting.

In Rivonia's Children, Frankel contrasts the activists' Jewishness with that of Percy Yutar, the state prosecutor in the Rivonia Treason Trial of '63, which led to the likes of former President Nelson Mandela being imprisoned on Robben Island.
Frankel says one incident still lingers from his three-year stint as Southern African correspondent based in Zimbabwe in the mid-'80s - the story of Maki Skosana.
