Glenn L. Martin (1886-1955), a pioneer aviator and manufacturer, was attracted to Baltimore by civic promoters of a new harbor-side airport in Dundalk (see Aviation Industry).
Martin's wartime boom began in 1939, as its work force in Baltimore rose from 3,639 in December 1938, to 30,326 at the time of Pearl Harbor, to a wartime peak of 52,474 in December 1942.
Eventually the Martin Company hired thousands of female and fl workers, though the latter were assigned to segregated assembly lines set up in rented space in Canton.

Martin could not afford the time or money to meet the requirement and risked the Navy's disapproval by altering the plans for the 1/4-scale Model 160 and constructing it as a 3/8-scale Model 162.
Martin engineers did not consider the deviations from the 162 plans to be a significant problem because they were more concerned about the hydrodynamic qualities of the 162A's hull than its flight characteristics, which they could evaluate with wind tunnel models.

Glenn L. Martin, a pioneer aviation designer and constructor, purchased 1,260 acres twelve miles east of Baltimore for the purpose of creating an aircraft manufacturing site for the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company.

During World War II, the Glenn L. Martin company developed two flying boats, the "Mariner" and the giant "Mars", and after the war the company would develop the last large flying boat in US service, the "Marlin".
Originally, the Martin Mars flying boats were produced for the US Navy and were used as troop and cargo transports among the islands of the Pacific.

One of the first Army contracts landed by the new company was the design a new bomber that would hopefully outperform the British-designed Handley-Page, which was at that time scheduled to be built in the USA by Standard Aircraft of Elizabeth, New Jersey.
The eighth (designated GMT for "Glenn Martin Transcontinental") was a special long-range version capable of 1500-mile range, and the ninth (designated GMC for "Glenn Martin Cannon") was fitted with a 37-mm cannon in the nose.
