In 1910 a new Methodist Church was built in Glenorchy, with a resident minister, and the old chapel was used for Sunday School and a Band of Hope.
In the 1950s a hall was built behind the Glenorchy Methodist church, and a fifty - year - old temporary wall inside the church was replaced: it had threatened to become temporary no longer, and in a strong wind, the congregation could see it move.
In 1972 a Presbyterian, the Rev. Chris Mostert, was appointed, to investigate, with Maurice Todd at Glenorchy, the possibility of developing a regional parish and team ministry, to include the Glenorchy Methodists under Rev. Jim Colville.

The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy is one of the most spectacular drives in the world.
Maori passed through the Glenorchy area on their way to the west coast in their search for Pounamu (Jade or Greenstone as it is known locally) but it wasn't until 1862 that settlers arrived, using the broad river flats for grazing.
Glenorchy Air run numerous trips from here including their "Trilogy Trail".™ They were also involved in flying actors and supporting staff during the filming of The Lord of the Rings in this part on New Zealand.

Tasmanian Aboriginals were the first inhabitants of Glenorchy, as the many middens along the banks of the Derwent (Teemtoomele Menennye to the Aboriginals) bear witness.
Glenorchy was part of the area of the South East tribe, and some names of people living along the banks of the Derwent have been recorded: Menepackatamana and Monopeletto were men, and Tangaragootta was a woman.
City status was given to Glenorchy on 24th October 1964. The College of Heraldry in Britain officially approved the City's Coat of Arms and Armorial Bearings in 1970.

The Glenorchy Centre is situated in the small market town of Wirksworth on the edge of the Peak National Park in Derbyshire.
In May last year we celebrated the fact that Glenorchy had been open for 20 years and we had a cele­ration tea followed by a service of thanksgiving for the work of the centre.

From the Glenorchy end the Smith family had constructed a road as far as Cerighton Station, and extended it about 1957 through Bennetts Bluff and almost to White Point.
The road to Glenorchy was opened in 1962 but remained unsealed until December 1998.
