 USA Train Trips
Most stations have some form of "entertainment" and it is better to have some time to spare than run the risk of missing your train, especially a connecting train, because of a late arrival.
Train travel in America is a time-consuming exercise because of the vast distances, so the less time you spend back-tracking, the better, and the more you will get to see.
The train makes a few stops en route to fill up with water (10,000 gallons for a roundtrip) and you can see the old-fashioned water tanks, one of which is presently being renovated and restored to its former self.

 L Train
Train buffs can get up close and personal with R40, R40M and R42 "L" trains as they wait at Rockaway Parkway and the view from the waiting area at East 105th Street is picturesque.
Ornate period ironwork adorns the quaint wooden crosswalk beneath the south end of the station and, at the south end of the northbound platform's roof, a quaint, cold-war oddity-a disused air-raid siren.
The platform is slightly curved to the right, and the two tracks are at different levels at the north end of the station, with the southbound tracks being higher due to their descent from an elevated stretch at Wilson Avenue.

 Train Order Accidents
When a train is in the clear on a siding to be passed, its markers are turned to show green (or yellow) to the rear when it is clear of the main track; otherwise, red markers show the train is not clear of the main track.
The station was at the west end, the west switch of the siding was 1127' east of it, then came the 1308' siding, and finally the CGW crossing, protected by an automatic interlocking with home signals, about 2134' east of the east switch of the siding.
Trains of the same class, and extra trains, must approach such points prepared to stop, unless a block system is in use and signals are clear.

Hudson Valley Ruins: Yonkers Power Station, aka Glenwood Power Station
The Yonkers Power Station of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, more popularly known as the Glenwood Power Station, was built between 1904 and 1906.
I was told a a longtime Yonkers resident that when the long freight trains came through the neighborhood, TV sets and electric lights dimmed and flickered.
The Power Station had “capacity sufficient to care for the needs of a considerable part of the county” in 1950.

The only train station shown is the one that requires a grade level crossing with Boylan Avenue.
In this plan, the intermodal station would be completely contained either in the wye or south of it between the Amtrak station and the TTA station.
The Wye Station is the intersection between New York and Miami, Charlotte and Willimgton.

Atherton may lose its train station
Closing the stations is just one of the proposals made in a new report published by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Caltrain's operator.
In addition to Atherton, the stations proposed for closure are Paul Avenue in San Francisco, Broadway in Burlingame, Bay Meadows in San Mateo, College Park in San Jose, and Castro in Mountain View.
Atherton is one of six Peninsula stations earmarked for closure under the $900 million plan, which aims to cut up to 17 minutes off the travel time between San Francisco and San Jose.

GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES MAJOR HUDSON LINE STATION RENOVATIONS
The historic Yonkers train station is the centerpiece of this 3 ½ year, $93 million project.
Last April, the station's seven, two-story arched windows were replaced, and retaining walls on both sides of the elevated tracks were repaired and painted.
Both stations will get elevators, and new ramps will lead from the platforms to the walkways, making the stations and the river walkway handicapped accessible for the first time.

We decided to visit the Glenwood depot, and we arrived as an eastbound coal train was passing by.
The train stopped by the depot, and all the smokers jumped off and bolted through the rain for the shelter of the eaves.
As the train picked up speed, we noticed a lot of smoke coming from the rear end of the train.

Trains.com - Future of the American Passenger Train
Train speed was a big advantage and to a small degree it is in some areas, but with the railroads going with single track mainlining since the 1970s, Amtrak is often pinched by dispatchers giving hotshot freights preferences.
Any rerouted train that would take 8 hours longer (4 hours westbound and 4 eastbound) would either have to eliminate vital connections at one end of the run or the other, or an entire sixth set of equipment would have to be put into service to allow this.
In addition, it also celebrated the history of the train, named after James J. Hill, often considered the most influential railroader in American history, and the fact that the train was historically the most popular train operating between the Midwest and Pacific Northwest.

 Travel by train
While the Air Train from DIA has been discussed for several years, without much progress, the Colorado Department of Transportation is studying several alignments - Glenwood Springs to Aspen, Craig to Steamboat, Steamboat to Vail and Steamboat to Aspen.
However, passenger rail may once again become a serious transportation option in Colorado as a number of rail advocates push for "travel by train." Union Station, a landmark in burgeoning lower downtown Denver, would serve as the hub for a revitalized passenger-rail network.
otentially the most influential rail promoter is Union Pacific, which is pushing for commuter rail service from DIA to Union Station (the Air Train), as well as along several Front Range corridors, including Denver to Boulder.
