Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Pedology (soil study)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
It is the branch of soil science that deals with soil genesis, morphology, classification and distribution.
Soil is not only a support for vegetation, but it is also the zone (the 'pedosphere') of numerous interactions between climate (water, air, temperature), soil life (micro-organisms, plants, animals) and its residues, the mineral material of the original and added rock, and its position in the landscape.
Pedologists are now also interested in the practical applications of a good understanding of pedogenesis processes (the evolution and functioning of soils), like interpreting its environmental history and predicting consequences of changes in land use, while agronomists understand that the cultivated soil is a complex medium, often resulting from several thousands of years of evolution.

Sample RIS -- Belarus, Mid-Pripyat State Landscape Zakaznik, 2001
These are: (1) floodplain landscape complexes with lowland hypnum-sedge mires, fl alder grassy-and-sedge forests in broad-coomb areas; and (2) flat-crested landscapes with mesohydrophilic meadows, oak-forests on soddy-gley and gley soils, as well as with forb-and-sedge mires.
All floodplain soils are poor in mobile nutrients (this is observed at 80 per cent of the area).
The soddy-polzolic, mainly sandy, soils of the over-floodplain terraces are characterized by elevated acidity, low humus content and unstable water regime.
