Glide API - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glide was a proprietary 3D graphics API developed by 3dfx used on their Voodoo graphics cards.
Glide is based on the basic geometry and "world view" of OpenGL.
Today old Glide supporting games can often be run on modern graphics cards with help of a Glide wrapper.

Glide is a proprietary API that is partly similar to OpenGL or Mesa, partly contains features only available as EXTensions to some OpenGL implementations, and partly contains features not available anywhere but within Glide.
There is also a Glide 3.0 in preparation that will extend the API for use of triangle fans and triangle strips, and provide better state change optimization.

I guess this means nVidia will not be supporting glide. - BeyondUnreal Forums
Only reason UT runs "better" in glide (which I think is a load of horse**** - OpenGl and S3TC on my GeForce runs and looks a hell of better than my previous voodoo card) is becuase the original Unreal game was developed for glide as it was the only thing around at the time.
The first thing they worry about is the fact that while NVidia cards can be made to use the Glide API (as was seen with Creative's Glide wrapper for the TNT2's), they wouldn't perform as well as a Voodoo card simply because 3DFx optimized their cards for Glide.
Glide always was a proprietory API, which means that it was meant only for 3DFx's use.

And, yes, the open sourcing of the Glide API has resulted in a reversal of sorts on the Glide wrapper question [4], with an emphasis on "of sorts".
Glide was a fine, lower-level API when it was initially released for Voodoo Graphics back in 1996, and proved a sound strategy to get developers using some of the then-new 3D features available through 3dfx Interactive.

There had been several such API's in the late 1990's, when consumer-model 3D cards started appearing; however, programmers have preferred to use generic ones that can work on several kinds of cards, thus the demise of such API's.

Glide vs D3D = HUGE difference, and one that shouldn't be ignored (as Andy does so elegantly in his topic).
At the time, coding your entire engine for Glide seemed to be a good idea, since there wasn't any other vialble API around.
Designing for that API automatically limits your target audience and makes it complicated to "reverse engineer" the core rendering engine to work with other APIs...thus the problems nVidia owners are currently seeing with UT-based games in D3D.

I may write a little utility that makes all the necessary registry and game settings changes and adjustments so users can run the 3D Setup utility to both specifically detect their modern card, and, choose between the two modes.
