Many astronomers now refer to this star as Gliese 710 by its designation in the famous Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars (CNS, now ARICNS database) of Wilhelm Gliese (1915-93), who was a longtime astronomer at the Astronomiches Rechen-Institut at Heidelberg (even when it was at Berlin).
Gliese 710 is a relatively dim, main sequence orange-red or red dwarf star of spectral and luminosity K5-M1 V (ARICNS; Joy and Abt, 1974; and Upgren et al, 1972).

Gliese 710 is a red dwarf star in the constellation Serpens Cauda, with visual magnitude 9.66 and a mass of 0.4–0.6 solar masses.
In a time interval of ±10 million years from the present, Gliese 710 is the star whose combination of mass and close approach distance will cause the greatest gravitational perturbation of our solar system.
Interestingly, the star with the second greatest perturbational effect in the past or future 10 million years was Algol, a triple star system that passed no closer than 9.8 light years, 7.3 million years ago, but with a considerably larger total mass of 5.8 solar masses.

From the article: “For the future passage of Gl 710, the star with the closest approach in our sample, we predict that about 2.4 × 106 new comets will be thrown into Earth-crossing orbits, arriving over a period of about 2 × 106 yr.
Granted we do not know that it has one, but if such debris collections are normal to star formation, one would think the solar system could pass right through that one.

Imagine a star in the night sky which with each passing day grows larger and larger until it surpasses first the sun and eventually the moon in size*.
*Current predictions regarding Gliese 710 predict it will pass us in a relative safe distance, relative 'cause although the star itself will have no real effect on our earth the comets and asteroids it sends hurdling from the Oort Cloud could at the least cause some 'trouble'.

The article looked 10 million years backward and 10 million years forward, and Gliese 710 is the best candidate they found for an Oort cloud perturber.
