Glires   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Glires is a proposed clade consisting of rodents and lagomorphs (rabbits, hares, and pikas).
This hypothesis that these form a monophyletic group has been long debated based on morphological evidence.
Recent data (2001) based on nuclear DNA support Glires as a sister of Euarchonta to form Euarchontoglires, but some genetic data from both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA have been less supportive.

Natural History of Oryctolagus cuniculus, domestic rabbit
In the 1980's, the Glires were supported mostly by morphologists who recognized the similarities in dentition as reason to group them together.
For example, Glires have absent first lower and upper incisors, absent upper and lower canines, absent first lower and upper premolars and enlarged upper and lower incisors [1,3,4].
This mammal lived in central and eastern Asia during the Eocene and is believed to be a common ancestor to the Glires [1].

 Molecular Systematics
The recently proposed affiliation between cetaceans and hippopotamuses is an example of a molecular hypothesis that has inspired fruitful reevaluation of the morphological traits supporting a cetacean-mesonychid relationship.
Determining the sister-group relationships of Primates, Dermoptera, Scandentia (Euarchonta), Rodentia and Lagomorpha (Glires) are the two initial priorities of this project.
The strong support for Glires likely can be ascribed to improvement in phylogenetic reconstruction brought about by thorough taxonomic sampling.

(Glires is the Latin plural of glis, which is the dormouse, -with thanks to Toby White.) They've been placed in the somewhat wider taxon of Gliriformes Wyss and Meng, 1996.
Archibald and Averianov, 2003 found that Barunlestes is a closer relative of Glires than the other members are but, as they hadn't thoroughly studied two of the genera in the family, they didn't feel in a position to offer a formal rediagnosis, (p.405).

In Glires (Lagomorphs and Rodents) the origin of the superficial masseter is restricted to a small, rugose area at the extreme anterior end of (or anterior to) the zygoma.
This placement imposes an extreme anteroposterior direction on the pull of the muscle, an obvious consequence of the Glires gnawing adaptation.
In primitive Glires, the rugosity is on the ventral side of a process differently placed in the Duplicidentata and Simplicidentata (sensu McKenna and Bell.) In the first (Mimitonida and Lagomorpha) the broad, conspicuous process is at the anterior end of the zygoma, some distance from the infraorbital foramen.

The core of the study consists of a taxonomic revision of the genus, a detailed description of the osteological morphology, extensive analyses on morphological characters, analyses on phylogeny, discussions on divergence time of the Glires, and analyses on functional morphology of mastication and locomotion.
