With Glitter, Carey was going to do a throwback record to the 80's that was the soundtrack to her movie of the same name.
It was an exciting time for Mariah with a huge new record deal, except that she supposedly overworked herself and had a physical and emotional breakdown that caused the release of both the movie and the record to be delayed.
Carey said at the time that she was a little worried about the sexual style James writes in, but decided to go with whatever he had for her.

As Mariah Carey was out of the spotlight working in her first movie and her world tour, she was working hard to make this soundtrack ("Glitter" is not one of her regular albums), she didn't really put all her soul in this work.

Glitter is a soundtrack album and seventh studio album by American singer Mariah Carey ¸ recorded for the film Glitter (film) and released in the United States on September 11 2001 (see 2001 in music) by Virgin Records.
It was a commercial failure compared to Carey's previous albums¸ and professional reviews either praised her for the new territories she eхplored (Rolling Stone declared it "a big step forward in terms of maturity for one of pop music's eternal kids" and gave it a three-star review) or criticized it as a disconcerting departure.
Carey has cited the September 11¸ 2001 attacks as one of the reasons the album failed.

Mariah began singing from the age of 2 and began voice lessons by age 4.
Mariah's need for perfection and increasing nervousness had her focusing more on hitting the high notes than entertaining the audience - the result were many unkind words by critics.

I wish those were stuck on the glitter CD and the pretty ballads from glitter which were the onlyg ood part of that album should have been on charmbracelet.

Mariah Carey: The Emancipation of Mimi - PopMatters Music Review
With Mariah Carey's latest album, The Emancipation of Mimi, Carey not only puts to rest the rumors of a career gone sour, she also, probably unknowingly, settles a debate that has been going on since she stepped on the scene with a "Vision of Love".
Back in the early '90s, Carey was one of the poster girls for all that was a diva, but she was forced to share the spotlight with another diva that already had a few years on her named Whitney Houston.
This is not to say Carey did not deserve the critical assault she received for the Glitter soundtrack and Charmbracelet, both albums were failures both musically and chart-wise, but it is fair to say Carey didn't have it all together and therefore the previous two efforts suffered.

Mariah Carey : Glitter - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Mariah Carey's first album for Virgin Records was supposed to be a triumph, an album that confirmed her status as pop's reigning diva, while serving as the soundtrack to a film that proved her crossover status was every bit as potent as that of her unexpected arch-rival Jennifer Lopez.
Superficially, it's not that all far removed from her last Columbia album, Rainbow, but if that record illustrated the freeing effect of her divorce from Tommy Motolla, this album shows that Mariah needs some guiding force, something to keep her on track.
If she indeed was paranoid about Lopez's career and success, as certain tabloid reports indicated, she shouldn't have made a record that seems to ape On the 6 the way that album slavishly followed prime Mariah.

I was so successful that they tore me down because my album was at number two instead of number one [a reference to the peak position of "Loverboy", and not actually to the album].
In reality, the album debuted at number seven on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, remained in the top twenty for two weeks and on the chart for just twelve; it spent less time on the charts than some of her albums spent in the Top Ten alone.
However, Glitter was a number-one selling album in countries such as Japan, where it became the first international soundtrack to reach the number one position.

 Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey was initially dismissed as not really being an artist, because she was so young, popular, traditionally attractive, and married to the president of her record company.
Carey has written nearly all her own hits - actually, she does better with her own material than with cover versions, where she tends to stick too close to the original arrangements - and over the years has gotten more involved in production as well.
Produced by Carey and DJ Clue, "Loverboy" breaks the mold of her usual cotton candy opening singles: it's much harsher, with a sample of Cameo's bass-heavy 1986 hit "Candy" and - on the remix only - raps from Da Brat and Ludacris.
