	Glitter (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Glitter is a 2001 drama film produced by Twentieth Century Fox (see 2001 in film), starring Mariah Carey, centering on the life and times of a struggling singer from the early club music scene.
		Largely panned by critics and audiences alike, it performed poorly in theatres after being labelled a vanity project and being an almost autobiographical account of Carey's life (despite claims in various interviews that the film was not autobiographical).
		Based loosely (as well as unintentionally?) on Carey's own life, it tells the story of a mixed-race woman who is abandoned by her white father and taken from her fl mother to be raised by foster parents.

		GLITTER is a simple and undemanding film with stereotyped characters and few surprises, but it's actually not that bad.
		GLITTER will please Mariah Carey's fans no end because she looks good all the way through and although this is not a musical, when she does sing, she sounds good too.
		I'm sure not too many film critics will rate this movie very highly, if at all, but it does have an audience, after all Mariah does have a very large fan base and a lot of people are just plain interested in what she will be like on screen.

		Billie and Dice fall in love, of course, and the scene in which they have sex for the first time is probably one of the funniest in the entire movie, simply because it plays out so quickly.

		This is what she should stick to -- although she's already made a second movie, "Wisegirls," due out next year.

		Mariah Carey (The Bachelor) heads the cast as Billie Franklin, a young girl with a big voice, who is abandoned by her boozing mother at the tender age of eleven.
		Dice and Billie become a couple (in a series of courting sequences which are so clichéd and antiquated that they are laughable) but when the major players in the music industry take an interest in Billie, Dice starts to feel less and less important.
		Glitter is set in New York City and in its many establishing shots we catch glimpses of the twin towers of the World Trade Center still standing.

		After a quickie boo-hoo introduction in which young Billie is abandoned by her bar-singer ghetto mom for no adequately explored reason and put in an orphanage, director Vondie Curtis Hall ("Gridlock'd") fast-forwards to a nightclub scene in 1983 (symbolized by the occasional butt-ugly costume).
		She can speak her lines without looking entirely foolish, but she's utterly flavorless emotionally and garners so little sympathy that the audience at the preview screening I attended (consisting of target-demographic Top 40-listeners) laughed hard and long at many of the picture's tender moments.
		Director Hall serves up montage after montage to keep the movie's pace at an acceptable clip, and he shows other signs that he's doing the best with the material he has to work with.

		The pair break up, thus leading us nicely to the most cringe-inducing part of the entire film when the two of them sit in opposite sides of town somehow simultaneously writing the same bad song.
		"Glitter" never pretends to be anything other than a showcase for Carey's talents, though don't ask me what those talents are - your guess is as good as mine.

		I think this movie should have been made a true full-autobiographical movie, then critics would not have been able to pick so much on how terrible the plot was and the bad acting could be excused and movie could have been more appreciated.

		The soundtrack for "Glitter," populated with songs from its main attraction, is little more than a testament to my theory concerning her career's slow decline; whereas Carey used to be a trend-setter, she now sees it fitting to follow suit instead.
