Boeing Air Traffic Management - News Room and Resources - John Hayhurst   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
We believe this will require the next generation air traffic system to be based on a "system-of-systems" architecture, integrating elements of the total air transportation system on the ground, in the air and in space.
The drop in air traffic since the September 11th terrorist attacks is also expected to be short lived and traffic growth will soon return to record levelsÑthough a war with Iraq would likely extend the time horizon for air traffic recovery.
Despite, the slowing of air traffic growth over the past couple of years, worldwide air traffic volume is still projected to double by 2020, and in Asia, air traffic volume is expected to triple.

Edwards Air Force Base - Global operational testing of GATM capability to enhance tanker mission   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Members of the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, Detachment 5, tested the KC-135 during an around-the-world tanker flight, while concurrently flying four additional GATM-equipped KC-135s at Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash., from the end of September through mid-October.
The global flight demonstrated the interoperability of the GATM system with established air traffic control structures in 17 different flight information regions, explained Reeves.
During this recent series of testing, the KC-135 GATM aircraft performed as expected, according to Reeves, and all missions were successfully accomplished, thanks in large part to prior testing completed by the combined test force here.

Traffic Management System keeps tanker’s worldwide access   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
GATM is the Department of Defense response to the International Civil Aviation Management Organization's new rules for Communication-Navigation-Surveillance and Air Traffic Management, which are being implemented worldwide.
To understand the GATM system, imagine driving to work each morning knowing in advance that every traffic light was green, there are no traffic jams along the way and that you’ll have immediate access to the base gate once you get there.
That, from an air traffic standpoint, is primarily the goal of the GATM system.

Summary Detail   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The Eleventh Air Navigation Conference of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has endorsed an operational concept for air navigation services worldwide that will enhance aviation safety and improve passenger convenience in terms of fewer delays and shorter flight times.
ICAO's latest forecast calls for world airline passenger traffic to grow by 4.4 per cent in 2004 and 6.3 per cent in 2005, with long-term growth at an average annual rate of around 4 per cent.
Albert Lam (Hong Kong, China) served as Chairman of the Conference, Karsten Theil (Denmark) as Chairman of the Committee on air traffic management, and Peter Charles Marais (South Africa) as Chairman of the Committee on communications, navigation and surveillance issues.

Listen to Shortwave, Ham Radio, Air traffic control, Airband, ACARS
Many air traffic control utilities of the worlds countries use shortwave for their air traffic control service as well as the domestic broadcasting.
Air traffic control via shortwave can be received because the air traffic control signals (ATC) travel far during nighttime over long distances.
Since shortwave air traffic control reception usually requires darkness for long reception of air traffic control, a greyline map is of great use in any air traffic control reception.

STSC CrossTalk - Upgrading Global Air Traffic Management - Jun 2003   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Traffic management for the airways is moving to a more efficient and effective method to track and control aircraft.
Without the GATM capabilities, pilots were forced to provide manual position reports via long-range voice communications, which typically involved a third party to relay this information to the appropriate air services center, as I mentioned earlier.
The need for the GATM ORD is based upon the recognition that the associated requirements are commonly levied by civil aviation agencies or host nations and they don't typically discriminate between commercial and military aircraft.

 Aviation and the Global Atmosphere
Therefore, although an integrated, global ATM system grew out of a need to meet growing demand, the ultimate effect will be enhanced operations and improved efficiency, primarily through less fuel burn for a given level of demand.
In some regions, the increasing gap between traffic demand and capacity provided by the physical infrastructure at many key airports is a critical limiting factor.
The flow management process will monitor capacity resources and demand at airports and in terminal and en route airspace and will implement strategies, where required, to protect ATC from overloads and to provide an optimal flow of traffic by making best use of available airspace capacity.

Defense AT&L: First in fleet: KC-135 global air traffic management
The advent of global air traffic management (GATM) is radically changing the world of global reach aviation.
To ensure the United States military access to global air routes, all aircraft using them must reach these standards by the time the world's air traffic control systems are converted to meet the GATM requirements.
The success of the KC-135 GATM program can be traced directly back to the building block nature of the program and lessons learned from earlier KC-135 programs.

Boeing Air Traffic Management - News Room and Resources - John Hayhurst Testimony   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Our country needs a new air traffic management paradigm because our current system and the anticipated modifications to it, although significant, simply will not provide the long-term capacity needed to allow uninhibited growth in air travel and aviation related economic activity.
The Air Transport Association estimates that the direct cost of delays to airlines exceeds $3 billion annually, and this does not include the indirect costs of lost time to passengers or the detrimental effects on business or general aviation.
Beyond the political consensus building that is needed, we are approaching our initiative to design the next generation air traffic management system in much the same way that we approach the design of an aircraft.

The end objective of the global plan and its attendant RTSP would be a safe, seamless, worldwide aviation environment for all airspace users.
The absence of such a seamless system quickly becomes apparent to corporate pilots flying their first international operation when they compare the level and quality of overall air traffic and associated services provided in North America and Western Europe to that provided in other parts of the world.
ICAO delegates recognized, of course, that an impoverished third-world country cannot afford the capabilities of an industrialized Western nation but, since a global air traffic management plan demands consistent worldwide safety standards, they recommended that financial and technical assistance must be provided.
