Global Communications was licenced to operate a network of television transmitters across Southern Ontario.
CanWest Global and TVA Régional Inc. (the private Quebec French Network) formed a partnership (51-49%) to purchase (English language station) CKMI-TV in Quebec City and received approval to establish re-broadcasters in Sherbrooke and Montreal.
Global had now acquired sufficient coverage of Canada to enable the chain of stations to start identifying themselves as "The Global Television Network".
