Global warming controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some opponents of global warming theory give more weight to data such as paleoclimatic studies, temperature measurements made from weather balloons, and satellites which they claim show less warming than surface land and sea records, though early balloon records have been shown to be possibly erroneous due to mechanical design flaws in the sensors.
Global warming skeptics dispute the claim that (or relevance of) a consensus of scientists supports the view of global warming presented by the IPCC, and say that even the IPCC report authors do not all support the reports.
Proponents of the view that greenhouse gases have caused recent global warming respond that correlation is not a significant part of the evidence.

Global warming is an increase over time of the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans.
Evidence of global warming is uneven with certain places, especially the north shore of Alaska, showing dramatic rises temperature far above the average for the globe as a whole [1].
Global warming causes the sea level to rise mainly because sea water expands as it warms, but some scientists are concerned that in the future, the polar ice caps and glaciers may melt.

Global warming theories attempt to account for the rise in average global temperatures since the late 19th century (0.6 ± 0.2°C) [1] (http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc_tar/wg1/figspm-1.htm) [2] (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/06/20010611-2.html) and assess the extent to which the effects are due to human causes.

Global warming is the entrapment of heat in the atmosphere by "greenhouse gases", mainly carbon dioxide.

To properly account for global warming attributable to manking we would need to either 1) have confidence in our understanding of climate 2) have many different worlds to compare, as is the case with smoking studies (comparing mortality rates of average smoker to average non-smoker).
Your argument is that because global warming could be really, really bad, and because mankind’s actions may be driving a substantial portion of that warning, that we must take action to prevent global warming.
The problem with the global warming debate is that the inferences are not as strong as those with respect to, say, gravity.

Skepticism thus plays an essential role in scientific research, and, far from trying to silence skeptics, science invites their contributions.
But some of the topics focused on by the skeptics are recognized as legitimate research questions, and also it is fair to say that the injection of environmental, political and religious perspectives in midstream of the science research has occurred from both sides in the global warming debate.
As the opinions in the global warming debate do not seem to be converging, it seems to me that one useful thing that can be done is to clearly delineate the fundamental differences.

Global warming (or Global Climate Change) is a very controversial subject as skilled scientists lie on either side of the issue of whether we are changing the weather.
The majority of climate scientists are in agreement that the overall warming of the planet (about 1 degree Fahrenheit since 1900), has been caused in part by mankind.
This "carbon sink" capacity complicates the issue of global warming, because the oceans may continue to have a vast holding capacity for CO2.

Now one would think "conservative" and "conservation" would go hand in hand...but tell a "conservative" we need to start getting off the oil teat, that global warming may well be a major problem (that we may well have caused), and that we need to work toward sustainability without fossil fuels, and they get really pissy.
See, I'd think that even if one didn't believe in global warming, one would want to cut pollution (look at the sky over Los Angeles and tell me if the conservative version of God would be happy), and cut the amount of money spent at the gas pump and on the heating oil in winter.
Global warming is one of our most critical environmental problems, but it is surely the most misunderstood.

While activists and politicians attempt to stem the tide of global warming through regulations, the "Earth" is changing, showing a robustness with respect to "greenhouse gases".
One has to wonder about the true extent of the global warming crisis given the exaggeration of activists, the complexity of the world environment, the limited data and our track record of prediction.
If some environmentalists are to be believed, we are on the verge of massive global climate change which will see a significant rise in sea levels, chaotic weather patterns, and catastrophic droughts all caused by small increase in global average temperature.

The implication of the skeptics’ argument is that whatever warming seems to be happening on the Earth’s surface, similar warming isn’t happening in the atmosphere.
This might mean that any observed surface warming is more likely due to the urban heat island effect -- where the heat-retaining properties of concrete and asphalt in urban areas artificially increase local temperatures -- rather than increasing atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide.
