At a casual glance, GloomCookie seems to almost be a bad parody of gothic-themed comics.
And finally there's Sebastian whose past is a mystery to him, and his girlfriend Chrys who may be biting off more than she can chew in confronting the monster under Sebastian's bed.
GloomCookie is very atmospheric, and that wouldn't happen without Naifeh's art.

Gloomcookie can often be seen on channel procrastinating while she should be doing her coursework.
She can also be found at work, where she is too small to reach the cabinets and squirts vinegar in her eye by accident sometimes.
This comment has fueled speculation that gloomcookie is pregnant.

Gloomcookie starts with a teeny, tiny goth girl named Lex and her dysfunctional relationship with another goth named Max.
At first when a friend got me a copy of Gloomcookie, I was afriad it would be just a ripoff of some other goth genre comic (Like Sandman or Jhonny the Homicidal Maniac).
Gloomcookie is a fun read, and great for anyone girl who has ever dreamed their boyfriend would turn into a gargoyle, kidnap her from her job in order to escape from Vincent Price, fly her to New Orleans and then take her shopping.

Dark Star - Miscellaneous Reviews: Gloomcookie Comic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
For those not in the know (probably the majority), "gloomcookie" is a term for a goth girl.
The combination of magical fairytale and down-to-earth realism works to great effect -- eavesdropping over the girl talk on one page reminds me of many a night out with my own chums, and the strange carnival in another strip is enigmatic and fantastical, and yet both elements work very well together.
I can't wait for the next issue (out in December) to see what the outcome of Isabella's party brings, and whether Sebastian ever gets to meet his father the ringmaster...

In the years since Gloomcookie, Naifeh has created such projects as the critically acclaimed all-ages Courtney Crumrin comics, the gender exploring gritty How Loathsome (with Tristan Crane) and the manga-styled Unearthly.
Gloomcookie was such a ridiculous fluke that it’s laughable.
I was never so impressed with superheroes, and tended toward comics like Swamp Thing, Mage, Heavy Metal magazine, etc. I always dreamed of bringing new and different readers into the medium, and when Gloomcookie drew a readership that was at least 50% female, I was ecstatic.

 Sequential Tart: Tart Teasers - GloomCookie: A Monster's Christmas (vol IV/iss 12/December 2002)
According to GloomCookie co-creator and scribe Serena Valentino, "GloomCookie is about life with some freaky stuff thrown in to make it a little more interesting...
No one's particularly normal — Sebastian lives with a monster under his bed who eats girlfriends, Chrys is not quite human, and Isabella seems to revel in her reputation as the Fairest and Most Cruel in the land.
Its atmosphere is one of moodiness and horror and a touch of noir, all of which is well-tempered with the appropriate amount of lighthearted comedy.

 Ink 19 :: Gloomcookie #1
Untraditionally somber, Gloomcookie walks the darker halls of Slave Labor Graphics, which is better known for the whimsical Lenore, the twisted Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, and America's favorite dairy products gone bad, Milk and Cheese.
While the writing is a bit awkward at times, and the art a bit rough, Gloomcookie's unobtrusive style is pleasing and refreshing.
There are some neat frames where a character's "portrait" is "framed," the monster under Sebastian's bed is deliciously decadent, and there are a couple of "Easter eggs" as well (just what is Chrys wearing in the final story?).

I've enjoyed Serena Valentino's GloomCookie since I first read it, with Valentino's spin on the goth world, for better or for worse.
Annabelle is a little doll that's seen a great deal in her long existence.
Part of the joy of Valentino's stories in GloomCookie was its wonderful subversion of the pretentious nature of so many goth-themed comics.

I love GloomCookie, but I knew I was able to tell a different style of story and I thought it was about time I do.
I was still in the GloomCookie head space when I wrote those two issues - I should say, I was thinking of it in terms of an ongoing story rather than the way I write Nightmares now.
I visit Annabelle's world and I visit my GloomCookie's world, both are great places to be.

The trades are the way to go on both of these, if you're interested, since both included extra material in the collection that regular readers didn't get.
It's not a spectacular life-changing story or anything like that, but it's got whimsical art and at times is a dead-on satirical send-up of goth culture.
posted 04-20-2001 02:59 PM I really liked Gloomcookie, and while I agree that the carnival storyarch wasn't as good as when the girl talks or the romance, it was still worth picking up.
