  Glory-Latest Classic Movie Reviews-Spout
Glory is a celebration of a little-known act of mass courage during the Civil War.
Glory was based on Lincoln Kirstein's Lay This Laurel and Peter Burchard's One Gallant Rush; the latter book was founded on the letters of Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the real-life character played by Matthew Broderick.
The film was based partly on the letters of Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), the commander of the all-fl 54th Regiment of the Massachussetts Volunteers, a unit formed to test the widely doubted ability of fl troops to serve in combat.

Seeing Glory for the first time only a couple of years ago, and then only because I knew of James Horner's wonderful soundtrack to it, I was immediately impressed.
The film itself shocked me (in a positive way), the cinematography is wonderful, and all the acting is top-notch, even if Matthew Broderick does seem a little too weak sometimes, and does not totally convince when his role asks for assertiveness.
But apart from these little glitches, the whole film is a wonderful, poignant piece of work.

Many war films have been made, but most are formulaic and dull, with little to say and even less to recommend.
Paths of Glory stands out among this collection of mediocrity as a haunting work and a searing portrait of World War I. The year is 1916, and the place is the front line of the World War I battlefields.
Paths of Glory was banned for several years in France because of its negative portrayal of French generals.

 Filmtracks: Glory (James Horner)
The Oscar-recognized film's vivid brutality during the opening scenes of the battle at Antietam would allow the story of the 54th Massachusetts unit to be told without actually showing the gruesome violence that would meet them along their journey to respect.
A second crucial element to Glory is Horner's employment of the Boys Choir of Harlem to accent the use of a full adult chorus throughout the score.
That cue in particular is positioned in the film to be accentuated by the ceremonial firing of cannons as a (pseudo) tribute to the unit.

But apart from the concept and a handful of inside jokes, the film misses its opportunity to break away from the technical routine, earning solid marks, but not enough for the awards stand.
In "Blades of Glory," Ferrell exaggerates the skating style of Elvis Stojko while adding his own quirks to create Chazz Michael Michaels, "an ice devouring sex machine?forged in the hell fires of Motown." At times, his performance is uncomfortably over-the-top; other times, just plain silly.
In "Blades of Glory," the filmmakers and actors understand how to poke fun by embellishing the costumes, the behind the scenes drama, the fantasy, the broadcast spectacle, and the fan base.
