This glossary lists terms used in various types of partner dances, leaving out terms of highly evolved or specialized dance forms, such as ballet, tap dancing, and square dancing, which have their own elaborated terminology.
In contrast, the CPB during normal dancing (heads up, feet down on the floor) is always at the same place of the dancer body, although defined in a loose way: it is said that the CPB is in the general area of the solar plexus.
In ballroom dances their common trait is that the dance couple moves (or intends to move) essentially sidewise to the leader's left while partners nearly face each other, with the leader's right side of the body and the follower's left side of the body are closer than the respective opposite sides.

The hold may be termed 'closed' when partners face each other as in a slide* or a house around* and 'open' when partners face into the set as in a balance* or around the set as in the lead around* in the Fifth Figure of the Foraer a Neaintin jig set.
It is danced on the ball of the foot in the 'down' jig and to slides but should be danced much flatter to polkas, particularly by the gents.
Danced on count 4 of the preceding bar mainly in jigs and polkas, the ball of the foot briefly taps the floor and is lifted before being brought down again on count 1 of the step.

Dance in which couples progress up and down a longways set by performing a sequence of figures with one or two couples (who are progressing the opposite way), then moving further along to repeat the sequence with a new couple or couples.
In sets with mostly mixed-gender couples, lining up before a contra dance so all the men are in the left-hand line and all the women are in the right-hand line from the dancers' point of view looking toward the top of the set.
Any longways dance for which a reel might be played, but the term is usually used in the name of a specific dance, as in the Virginia Reel or the Temperance Reel.

Technically, it is proper to start the dance in the following way: You walk onto the dance floor with your partner, set up the standard partner position frame, and then begin on the 6th beat of the measure, with the man stepping forward with his left foot and the woman stepping back with her right.
Because when you are dancing to a great song with your partner, doing cross body leads, complicated turns, shines, and interacting with your partner and moving to the phrasing of the music, there is no time to be thinking about what beat and what foot you should be on.
One can dance in many ways, and in connection with many different aspects of the music: rhythm, melody, mood, meaning of the words, tempo, harmony, intensity, etc. What matters most is what each dancer prefers.....and that they don't smash into their neighbors on the dance floor.

In most English country dances, the set is divided into small groups who perform the dance and then progress, moving up toward the top or down toward the bottom of the set, to dance it again with another small group.
