  Glossop Poor Law Union and Workhouse
Glossop Township workhouse was erected in 1832-4, just before the passing of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act.
Poor law administration at that time was in the hands of the Vestry meeting which, in January 1833, accepted specifications and plans for the building of a workhouse and invited tenders for its construction.
All workhouse inmates were required to wear a workhouse uniform, which for able-bodied women consisted of a blue and white striped dress, apron, shawl, and bonnet or cap which at Glossop had a distinctive pointed shape.

The Glossop Lecture, the premier event in the Engineering Group’s calendar, was given this year at the British Geological Survey’s head office in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire, by Professor Martin Culshaw, Chief Engineering Geologist at the BGS.
Glossop’s elder daughter, Lady Chitty, attended the lecture, presenting Martin with the Glossop Medal and Jim with the Glossop Award.

Anyone interested in Glossop's history would be well advised to visit the town to look at the local collection at the Library plus the wonderful Heritage Centre on Henry Street right in the middle of town.
In 1986 a group of local enthusiasts decided that it was high time for Glossop to have a base where all the historic background to the town could be put on public display for all to enjoy.
Glossop Heritage Trust was formed and with financial grants from High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council a town centre property was leased to house exhibitions and displays, illustrating the rich historic background of Glossopdale and district.

The Bulls Head is the oldest pub in Glossop and over the back door is a stone lintel which bears the date 1607, unfortunately covered over by a modern wooden verandah.
The name of the Bull is thought to have its origins from either the Papal Bull edict of the 13th century requiring that provision be made for travelers in every parish or that it was from the bull baiting that took place on the nearby Castle Hill.
