The Grebe was very agile, but suffered from wing flutter, which lead to all RAF aircraft being modified with additional wing struts.
Grebes were retired from the RAF in 1929, replaced in part by the Gloster Gamecock which was in essence a developed Grebe, (Gloster fighter design, from Nighthawk to Gloster Gladiator was essentially evolutionary).
A single Grebe was gifted to New Zealand by Sir Henry Wigram, and subsequently another two Grebes were acquired by the New Zealand Permanent Air Force, fore-runner of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, where they served until the mid 1930s.

The Gloster VI named the “Golden Arrow” was the first Gloster monoplane and broke the World speed record at 336.31mph on September 10th 1929.

The Real Thing: The Grebe was designed after the first world war by H.P. Folland, perhaps best known for the Gnat jet used for many years by the Red Arrows.
The Grebe first flew in 1923, and bore more than a passing resemblance to the wartime S.E.5, which was also designed by Folland.
I really like the red and white checker boards of 56 squadron, but unfortunately they are not an option with the kit, so I made my own by cutting up solid red decal film into squares placed over a single long white oblong.

 The Gloster Gladiator
For its day, the Gloster Gladiator was not only pretty to look at, but was a beautiful aircraft to fly, providing that you were not being chased by a Messerschmitt Bf109 at the time.
It was a derivative of the Gauntlet that the Gladiator was built, being a private venture to specification F.7/30 and first flew as a prototype on 12th September 1934 and then only known as the SS37.
It began series production to Specification F.14/35 in July 1935 and the first flight of the Gloster Gladiator was made in the January of 1937.

On the back it is marked (hand written) "Gloster Grebe II - NZPAF", now what I would like to know is...............
I would say that yes, it is an RNZAF Grebe, but very late in the types service.
A similar angle on the Port Hills appears in the previously mentioned Vildebeeste photo.

Developed from the Gloster Grouse (an experimental aircraft later developed as a trainer), Gloster's Grebe was the Royal Air Force's first post World War I fighter aircraft, entering service in 1923.
Including 2 seat trainer variants, a total of 133 Grebes were produced, all but 4 were Mark IIs.

I found three photographs of Gloster Grebes (at leats I think they are), two of them of the same aircraft, J-7530.
I began to ponder whether or not the Grebe was in front-line service as late as 1930 (one has to do something crawling behind a lorry at 20mph on the A420).
Neither 19 nor 29 were flying the Grebe in 1930, according to Jeff Jefford's RAF Squadrons - they'd moved on to Siskins by then.

Witnesses said that the plane was flying "fairly high" but got into a spin.
