The total number of Swedish settlers in Southern Jersey is not known, but in 1693, long after the Swedes ceased to exercise any control over the country, it was reported by Peter Stuyvesant that there were 1,000 Swedes in the territory who retained their Swedish language and customs.
The half of New Jersey which the two Quakers Fenwick and Byllinge had bought from Lord Berkeley was an undivided interest, but after 1673-74, Cateret obtained a new grant which divided the State geographically and gave him the northern portion of the State.
These early New Jersey colonial governments, asserted, 100 years before the American Revolution, substantially the same principle of sovereignty of the people themselves, which was later set forth in the Declaration of Independence.

Babcock was born June 17, 1832, in Unadilla Forks, New York, and died Dec. 16, 1893, in Plainfield, New Jersey.
His most well-known inventions are the phonograph (1878), the carbon-button transmitter for the telephone speaker and microphone (1877), the incandescent lamp (1879), a revolutionary generator of unprecedented efficiency (1879), the first commercial electric light and power system (1882), and the key elements of the motion-picture apparatus (1891).
He was born Feb. 29, 1860, Buffalo, New York, and died Nov. 17, 1929, Washington, D.C. Alexander Lyman Holley (1832-1882), U.S. mechanical engineer and key organizer in founding ASME, was considered the foremost U.S. steel and plant engineer and designer of his time, especially in regard to applying research to modern steel manufacturing processes.
