Gloucester Township, which took its name from the cathedral city of Gloucester on the banks of the River Severn in England, was further subdivided into four smaller townships, and on June 1, 1695 became one of the first New Jersey municipalities to incorporate.
The Mayor of Gloucester Township is Cindy Rau Hautton.

The Township of Washington was incorporated on February 17, 1836 as part of Gloucester County during a meeting held at the Green Tree Tavern, at the corner of Egg Harbor Road and GreenTree Road.

A green monster recently arose from the murky swamps and overtook Veterans Memorial Park in Gloucester Township.
On Thursday, Aug. 18, Gloucester Township hosted "Movie Night" in the park, which featured "Shrek 2" as the main attraction.
"Through the committee, it was recommended that we hold a movie night," said Gail MacDonald, Director of the Gloucester Township Recreation Department, who coordinated the event.
