Glovebox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A glovebox, also called a glove box, is a sealed container that is designed to allow one to manipulate objects while being in a different atomsphere to the object.
Built into the sides of the glovebox are two gloves arranged in such a way that one can place their hands into the gloves and be able to perform tasks inside the box without breaking the seal or allowing potential damage to a worker's hands.
Gloveboxes and their associated gloves are often made of plastic.

Engineered Systems: Gloveboxes and Class III BSCs: no room for error
Gloveboxes are used in a wide variety o f applications, including the handling/processing of biomedical isotopes, radioactive and contaminated materials, as well as infectious biologicals.
Glovebox ventilation design must be carefully performed and reviewed to ensure that during both design conditions, as well as upset conditions, the glovebox ventilation system continues to operate in a safe manner to ensure that workers and the surrounding confinement area do not become contaminated.
While the glovebox is designed and constructed to be airtight, pressure transients are often experienced within the glovebox during the transfer process of materials in/out of the box, opening and closing of adjacent gloveboxes, as well as general operation of the glovebox glove ports (pumping of the box).

 The Glassware Gallery: Glove Boxes
An inert atmosphere glovebox (also referred to as a "dry box") is a piece of equipment used for the manipulation of air and water sensitive materials.
Gloveboxes are sometimes equipped with electronic sensors to monitor oxygen and water content.
Having the glovebox at a negative pressure with respect to the atmosphere is a Bad Thing because air will be drawn into the box through any small pinholes or leaks.

The "generator" glovebox was created to address this question, "How do we get material into the facility?" A generator glovebox creates cans of material, despite the fact that it receives no cans, allowing it to simulate the receipt of material by the facility.
Glovebox holdup is the material that is outside of the processing equipment but within the glovebox.
Gloveboxes are also informed by the WriteInv object when they need to write out their inventory, which consists of material in cans waiting to be processed, material in process, scrap, equipment holdup, and glovebox holdup.

Gloveboxes such as those used in the WSRC FB-Line mechanical line are used to confine hazardous and radioactive materials.
The pressure within the glovebox is negative to the exterior so air leakage past the gloveport seals is toward the interior of the gloveboxes.
As the old glove is forced into the glovebox interior, the O-ring seal for the old glove wipes the ID of the gloveport.

ESA - Human Spaceflight and Exploration - Research - The Microgravity Science Glovebox
Most people think of a ‘glovebox’ as a compartment in the dashboard of a car where manuals, road atlases, various oddments and even occasionally gloves are stored.
ESA's Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG), now on board the supply vehicle Leonardo in the hold of the Space Shuttle Endeavour on its way to the International Space Station, is a far more complicated piece of equipment.
To build a glovebox that will last at least ten years in weightlessness, however, was a much tougher proposition.

It is important to inspect and change glovebox gloves on a regular basis to protect employees and to maintain the cleanliness/integrity of the materials and processes in the gloveboxes.
Since glovebox gloves (as well as boots and O-ring bags) are use as a primary containment for nuclear material, this created a potential safety hazard to workers working around (or in) these gloveboxes.
With the glovebox operations at a minimum and the glove change program no longer used, glove usage went down drastically causing the age of the warehouse stock to increase.
