Topic: Glucose test

Encyclopedia article: Glucose tolerance test   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
A Glucose Tolerance Test in medical practice is the administration of glucose (A monosaccharide sugar that has several forms; an important source of physiological energy) to determine how quickly it is cleared from the blood.
The test is usually used to test for diabetes (Any of several metabolic disorders marked by excessive urination and persistent thirst), insulin resistance (additional info and facts about insulin resistance), and sometimes reactive hypoglycemia (additional info and facts about reactive hypoglycemia).
Using a glucose tolerance in this context resembles use of a Rorschach test in that it is often used to support a diagnosis that the patient and doctor are already reaching agreement on based on other evidence, but it is inadequate by itself to confirm or refute the diagnosis (unlike its use for diabetes).

Hypoglycemia is characterized by a drop in blood glucose to a level where first it causes nervous system symptoms (sweating, palpitations, hunger, trembling, and anxiety), then begins to affect the brain (causing confusion, hallucinations, blurred vision, and sometimes even coma and death).
