Using light and scanning electron microscopy most of the type material of 172 species and subspecies of glycerids (three of them representing fossil taxa and three others belonging to other polychaete families) were examined.
More than 4000 specimens from all over the world were studied and measured, and the 42 valid species are described and illustrated in detail.
A list of all taxa together with their synonyms and an identification key tor all Glyceridae known to this date are also presented.

 MACROBENTHIC POLYCHAETES ALONG THE SHELF WATERS OF THE WEST COAST OF INDIA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The study indicates an average standing crop of 5526 kg/km2 with a decreasing biomass with increase in depth.
Polychaetes, crustaceans and molluscs were the dominant groups.Being a major group, polychaetes were studied in detail and was found to be composed of the following families: Aphroditidae, Amphinomidae, Hesionidae,Phyllodocidae, Syllidae, Nephthydae, Eunicidae, Glyceridae, Spionidae,Cirratulidae, Orbunidae, Capitellidae, Sternaspidae, Ampharetidae,Terebellidae, Sabellidae and Serpulidae.
The spatial distribution of benthos along the west coast and their relation to environ!mental parameters were discussed.

For comparison with data entered beginning with cruise 112 (07-15-85) any families (and their associated species) identified on old data sheets that were not identified on the new format were lumped under the "unidentified Polychaete" category.
Other species of polychaetes in the families Cirratulidae, Glyceridae, Goniadidae, Lumbrineridae, Nereidae, Orbinidae, Spionidae, Magelonidae, Phyllodocidae, Syllidae and Capitellidae that were identified under the old format were lumped into the "unidentified" category of their respective family for analysis.
In the new format, the category "shrimp" included the following from the old format: Alpheus normanni, Calianassa sp., Ogyrides limicola, Palaemonetes sp., P. pugio, P. vulgaris and Penaeid shrimps.

Phylum Annelida Class Polychaeta Order Phyllodocida Family Glyceridae Genus Hemipodus Species borealis
Description: Reaches a length of 8 cm; color is purplish red to pink; the prostomium is long and pointed having four small tentacles at the tip.
We found many of these worms at The Evergreen State College beach.
