The activity of intracellular bile salt hydrolase found in strain ATCC 43121 was 14-fold higher than that in either of the other two strains.
The optimum pH for deconjugation of sodium glycocholate was between 4 and 5.5 for all three strains.
For deconjugation of sodium taurocholate, the optimum pH was between 3.5 and 4.5 for strains L1 and ATCC 43121 and was between pH 5 and 6 for strain O16.

In all subjects the increase in NEFA was accompanied by a decrease in reserve albumin for palmitate.
After injection of MM preparations with up to 530 mg glycocholic acid, a rapid decrease of the reserve albumin was observed.
Thus, before drugs incorporated in MM can be prescribed to neonates who are at risk for having kernicterus, the impact of intravenous MM on bilirubin binding and NEFA levels must be investigated in that patient population.

 Corzo and Gilliland, March 1999
ABSTRACT Bile salt hydrolase activity of Lactobacillus acidophilus was measured based on the disappearance of sodium glycocholate and sodium taurocholate from the reaction mixture using HPLC.
The amount of sodium glycocholate and sodium taurocholate that disappeared was proportional to the amount of sodium cholate that appeared in the mixture as detected by HPLC.
Sodium glycocholate did not precipitate at the enzyme reaction conditions (37°C and pH 5.4) for determining bile salt hydrolase activity.

Possible Models for the Micellar Aggregates of Glycocholate and Taurocholate Salts from Crystal Structures, QELS, and ...
The structures of crystals of rubidium glycocholate (monoclinic) and rubidium taurocholate (monoclinic and tetragonal) were solved by X-ray diffraction analysis.
These structures, together with those of the sodium salts formerly determined, were used to infer models for the corresponding micellar aggregates in aqueous solutions.
We studied the rubidium salts in place of the sodium ones by extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy when their structures are similar.

Three major bile acids (cholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid, and deoxycholic acid) in the form of glycine or taurine conjugates represent greater than 95% of all bile salts in humans.
I-BABP binds two molecules of glycocholate with weak intrinsic affinity but an extraordinary high degree of positive cooperativity as determined by isothermal titration calorimetry and an NMR based site-specific binding assay.
The NMR structure of the ternary complex of I-BABP with two different bile salts, glycocholate (GCA) and glycochenodeoxycholate (GCDA), has defined the structural topology of the doubly ligated I-BABP and revealed a number of potential protein/ligand contacts specific for each binding site.

 MSD - entry 1eio
We have determined the solution structure of porcine ILBP in complex with glycocholate by homonuclear and heteronuclear two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy.
The conformation of the protein-ligand complex was determined by restrained energy minimization and simulated annealing calculations after docking the glycocholate ligand into the protein structure.
The overall tertiary structure of ILBP is highly analogous to the three-dimensional structures of several other intracellular lipid binding proteins (LBPs).
