The Piltdown Inquest - CHAPTER EIGHT
However, Peter Costello, a biographer of James Joyce and one of a handful of Piltdown scholars, and Glyn Daniel, a world-famous archaeologist, editor of Antiquity, and student of Piltdown for decades, cannot be disregarded in any inquest into the Piltdown case.
Glyn Daniel, who had rejected every prior identification of a culprit, approved of Costello's.
Daniel is impressed by the fact that in the entire field (he comes to a total count of 21 suspects), Hewitt was the only one who said he did it-with a friend who may have been Samuel Woodhead.

Glyn Daniel, Fellow of St John's College, Disney Professor Emeritus of Archaeology in the University of Cambridge, and Editor of ANTIQUITY since 1957, died at home in Cambridge on 13 December 1986.
Our warm sympathies are with his widow, Ruth, who retired as Production Editor on 31 December 1986, and will not have Glyn to share her retirement with.
In this number, which went to press during his illness, we print a frontispiece portrait of Glyn, taken by the Cambridge studio of Ramsey and Muspratt.

ESOP/Fell Rebuttal by Dr. Norman Totten (1981)
Glyn Daniel, as a long time editor of ANTIQUITY and also of the book series, "Ancient People and Places" (which has reached 83 volumes with Shaw's NIGERIA in 1978), as well as author of numerous books and articles, and Professor of Archaeology at Cambridge University, wields tremendous influence and power within his discipline.
Daniel's "however we may interpret the radio-carbon dates" is ambiguous and confusing.
It may seem unkind to suggest it, but in view of Daniel's acerbic and accusatory review, one can hardly help but wonder if his kind of misinformation is what he expected from his third-year archaeology students and would have preferred to have found in AMERICA B. Daniels views here are badly outdated.

Megalithic rock art discovered in Anglesey
The site, located on an exposed peninsula on the western side of the island was excavated between 1952 and 1953 by Terrence Powell and Glyn Daniel, who recorded the decoration of five stones.
At first, it was thought that the art had already been recorded during the excavation but, following a detailed study of the monument, it was revealed that the original excavation team had missed this and several other stones that contained rock-art.
The newly discovered decorated stone, referred to in Powell and Daniel’s excavation report as Stone 7, forms the northern wall of the eastern chamber.

 Fell and Egyptian Pt. I
Glyn Daniel (Cambridge, Disney Chair of Archaeology) called Fell's claims "rubbish" in The New York Times Review of Books (Daniel 1977).
Daniel had coined the term "hyper-diffusionism" in 1962 to describe earlier improbable models of cultural diffusion and had extensively investigated modern archaeological fakes and frauds.
Colleagues heeded Daniel’s advice to avoid Fell, but the public enjoyed America B.C. through several printings of different editions and also bought Fell’s two follow-up books, Saga America (Fell 1980) and Bronze-Age America (Fell 1982).

He will be assisted as advisory editors by Professor Gerhard Bersu, Dr G. Bushnell, Professor M. Mallowan, Professor Stuart Piggott, and Sir Mortimer Wheeler, and publication will continue without a break.
