Glynn County is a county located in the state of Georgia.
The county, one of the original eight counties in the state, was named after John Glynn, a member of the British House of Commons who defended the cause of the American Colonies before the American Revolution.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older.

In Dec. 1825, the legislature authorized the county's superior and inferior courts to meet in the Glynn County Academy.
The County of Frederica consisted of all lands in Georgia south of the Ogeechee River, and the town of Frederica on St. Simons Island was to be the county seat.
Glynn County, which was seventh on the list and thus is considered Georgia's seventh county, consisted of all of St. David and St. Patrick parishes (see map).

In 1797, the General Assembly transferred the county seat from Frederica on St. Simons Island to the town Brunswick.
The first public building, Glynn Academy, was built in 1819 and closed four years later due to lack of attendance.
In 1826, the General Assembly of Georgia granted title to much of the undeveloped town to Urbanus Dart and William R. Davis.

Glynn County and the City of Brunswick are located in southeast coastal Georgia, at approximately 81 - 30 - 00 north latitude and 31 - 15 - 00 west longitude, or about half way between Jacksonville, FL.
Thus a large area of the populated portion of the county borders along coastal marshlands, rivers or streams, resulting in much of the populated areas being in low lying areas ranging from a few feet up to 10 to 14 feet above mean sea level.
The area west of Georgia 99 is rural and is primarily forest agriculture with the trees being harvested for the paper industry.

Each resident of Glynn county is granted an exemption on that person's homestead form all Glynn County ad valorem taxes for county purposes in the amount of $8,000 of the assessed value of that homestead.
Taxes are normally due Glynn County by December 20 of each year but the law allows taxpayers 60 days from the date of mailing before interest may be charged.
Mobile homes that are temporarily located in the county and are owned by a business that is not located in the county should be identified to the Board of Tax Assessors of their presence to avoid being cited for failure to apply for the location permit.

Glynn and Camden Counties constituted a part of the older settled section of Georgia dating back to the Revolutionary War and before.
While a good deal of land in those counties was granted by the Crown of England before the Revolutionary War, this section did not begin to draw settlers until after the War.
Glynn and Camden did not have regular representation in the state legislature until about 1795-1800, on account of no elections being held, and neither had they county officers and county government until about 1788.

The Glynn County Courthouse in Brunswick, Georgia, seen in the above chrome postcard image was built in 1907 and remained in use as the Courthouse until 1991, when a new courthouse was completed across the street (see photo on the right).
Glynn County plans to rehabilitate the old Courthouse for use as a meeting hall and offices for the county commission.
The 1991 Glynn County Courthouse should put to rest the notion that new courthouses cannot be also be well-designed.

In 1999 the Mexico-based Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network recognized the Altamaha River Delta in Glynn and McIntosh Counties as a major reserve for shorebirds, one of only 40, highlighting its importance as a stopover for migratory and wintering birds traveling between the Artic and South America.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources estimates this area supports at least 55,000 species of seabirds and shorebirds annually, stating "There are very few places as valuable to such a large and diverse number of coastal birds in all the southeast United States."
Boat ramps, picnic areas and hiking trails along the waterway are provided by state, federal and county facilities.
