Gmail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While Gmail is not entirely open to the general public yet, most Gmail users have many invites to spare, as Google gives most users one hundred free (or as low as 20) invitations (and frequently replenishes them, as a reward for users who frequently check their Gmail accounts).
Gmail allows users to categorize their e-mails with "labels." Labels give users a flexible method of categorizing e-mails, since an e-mail may have any number of labels (in contrast to a system in which an e-mail may belong to only one folder).
Gmail also initially received a lot of criticism for a statement they made in their original terms of use, refusing to guarantee that all e-mails at Gmail would be deleted upon request by the user.

Ever since Google started to offer users a GMail e-mail account, which includes storage space of a 1000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with.
Because the GMail files will clutter up your Inbox folder, you may wish to create a filter in GMail to automatically move the files (prefixed with the GMAILFS letters) to your archived mail folder.
There's still a number of limitations of the file-system (such as total filename size must be less than 40 characters), and it doesn't make full use of the secure internet protocols available.

While GmailFS operates on a Unix command-line interface, Gmail Drive's ability to add a Gmail account as a drive on Windows Explorer makes it simple for anyone to use their Gmail account for file storage just like they would use an external hard drive.
If Gmail Drive were to add support for multiple Gmail accounts, and develop a system to allow guest logins, this would really help develop the science of filesharing utilizing an email-based system.
As far as file sharing goes - the way that Gmail Drive exists right now, a group of friends could each upload a gigabyte worth of files to each Gmail account they have, and then share their passwords among each other, creating a small filesharing ring.

GMail’s e-mail services may be great (and we’ll be writing up articles on how to use them more efficiently), but the nice thing about GMail is some of the third-party add-ons that various developers have created.
Today, we’ll be discussing the GMail Drive shell extension which allows you to use your GMail account as a storage drive.
Adding files to your GMail drive is just a matter of dragging and dropping the files onto the GMail drive, or right-clicking on a file, then going to the Send to option, and choosing GMail drive.
