A couple of things to consider: 1) gmane can be read using the web interface: http://news.gmane.org the addresses are all (slightly) obfuscated there to avoid automated email harvesting.
Some folks read their lists on gmane, but have no-mail subscriptions so they can still post as subscribers.
If you run INN you can receive gmane.* as a normal newsfeed, which is read only at this point (i beleive).

You can add a header to your messages to prevent Gmane from archiving them, or to control when a message should expire from Gmane.

The lists continue unchanged for those who prefer them as they are, but in addition, list traffic is now being mirrored to the Gmane mail-to-news gateway so that those who prefer to read list traffic with a newsreader may do so.

Lists for asking questions, reporting bugs, discussing new features etc. One major disadvantage of those list, or at least to me, is the mail part: getting "You got mail" warning almost every 5 minutes.
Of course I could set up a different POP mailbox and check that less often but this week I discovered a much better solution: Gmane.
If you maintain one or more mailing lists I recommend adding those to Gmane.

This isn't a new idea, but with Gmane no messages are ever expired from the server, and the gateway is bidirectional.
There are currently 5,944 mailing lists subscribed to Gmane, with a total of 18,747,653 messages.
The package includes we:search (a search engine), weaverd (a back-end daemon that generates thread and group views), weft (takes a mail or a news message and formats it into HTML), and loom (news reader and front end to weaverd and weft).

Gmane's instructions for access through a NG reader or web interface might lead one to believe that it is possible to post also by an initial reply confirmation via email with Gmane.
GMane certainly can let you post to the lists it archives so long as the listowners want that to happen.
Also you may not see all the postings as some subscribers choose not to have their messages archived on GMane as it is a public archive.

Mail-to-news gateways have been built before, but gmane is interesting because it is bidirectional—you can post via usenet and have it funneled into the mailing list.
Gmane is focused on communications about free software, but it's also the most comprehensive cross-media threading system I've seen.
The world will be a better place when conversations can start in email, move into mailing lists, web forums, and blogs, and provide access to the whole thread from any entry point.

It basically means using Gnus to read some special hidden Gmane newsgroups, think about whether lists should be added or not, decide whether the names are nice or not (and possibly engage in email conversation with people about these things), and then hit some magical Emacs keystrokes.
Hi, I recently switched my email/gmane client from Thunderbird to Entourage 2004 and was disappointed to find out that gmane does not work in Entourage.
I suspect it has been set up correctly in Gmane but that emails are not being sent correctly by the mailing list.

Much in the spirit of open source, anyone can easily sign up a new mailing list that they would like to be available as a newsgroup.
In addition to being a simple gateway, GMANE has features in place to reduce the amount of spam that flows through the system.

Access to Boost mailing lists via newsgroup (NNTP) is contributed by GMANE.
GMane news server need to be made from subscribed addresses because GMane simply forwards your postings on to the appropriate email list.
Don't be fooled by GMane's authentication message that says "you are now authorized to post to this list" after you answer its autogenerated mail; only subscribed addresses may post.

Note that GMane's naming conventions are slightly different than netbeans.org's, so the newsgroups don't necessarily have exactly the same names as the mailing lists.
To post via GMane, you just need to reply to an authorization message GMane sends you when you first try to post to a given group.
To avoid your messages being moderated, you can also contact the list owner and request that your address be added to the list of non-subscribers allowed to post to the list.

The first newsgroup mirrored by gmane was the nbusers mailing list.
Gmane intended to rename the nbusers list to the new scheme, but actually never did it.
With this knowledge it shouldn't be a problem to find the newsgroups.
