		Leopold Gmelin (August 2, 1788 – April 13, 1853) was a German chemist.
		Gmelin was the son of Johann Friedrich Gmelin.
		He studied medicine and chemistry at Göttingen, Tübingen and Vienna, and in 1813 began to lecture on chemistry at Heidelberg, where in 1814 he was appointed extraordinary-, and in 1817 ordinary-, professor of chemistry and medicine.

	Gmelin Database Overview
		The Gmelin Database is the sister database to Beilstein, covering inorganic and organometallic compounds from 1772 to (presently) 1995.
		Again based on a German publication, the Gmelin Handbuch der anorganischen Chemie, the database currently comprises over 1.5 million compounds, including glasses, alloys, ceramics, minerals and coordination compounds, and 1.3 million reactions.
		Gmelin has wide application outside the chemistry field, as it contains information for (among others) materials scientists, biologists, biochemists, medicinal chemists, geologists and mineralogists.
