Quintus Servilius Caepio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He led one of the two forces against the Germanic tribes, the Teutones, the Cimbri, and Tungri/Marcomanni/Cherusci in the Battle of Arausio in 105 BC, along with then consul, Gnaeus Mallius Maximus.
At the Battle of Tolosa, Caepio refused to co-operate with his superior officer, consul Gnaeus Mallius Maximus, who was a New Man, not a member of the Roman Elite.
Caepio refused to even camp with Maximus and his troops, when it appeared that Maximus was going to reach a treaty and take the glory for the battle, Caepio ordered his men to engage to Germans, and the battle that ensued saw the complete destruction of the Roman army.

Gnaeus Mallius Maximus was a new man - not part of the established elite of Roman political life.
Meanwhile, Maximus had managed to convince Caepio to move his force to the same side of the river, but Caepio still insisted on a different camp, and actually pitched his closer to the enemy.
Caepio, presumably motivated into action by the thought that Maximus may be successful in negotiations and claim all the credit for a successful outcome, launched a unilateral attack on the camp on October 6.

Ranged against the migratory tribes of the Cimbri under Boiorix and the Teutoni were two Roman armies, commanded by the proconsul Quintus Servilius Caepio and consul Gnaeus Mallius Maximus.
However, the proconsul Caepio did not respect the consul commanding the other force; Gnaeus Mallius Maximus was a new man - not part of the established elite of Roman political life.

They were opposed on the right bank of the Rhone by the proconsul Caepio, on the left by the consul Gnaeus Mallius Maximus and by his legate, the consular Marcus Aurelius Scaurus, under him at the head of a detached corps.
Maximus, an insignificant and incapable man, was as consul the legal superior of his prouder and better born, but not better qualified, proconsular colleague Caepio; but the latter refused to occupy a common camp and to devise operations in concert with him, and still, as formerly, maintained his independent command.
When Caepio saw Maximus negotiating with the envoys of the Cimbri, he fancied that the latter wished to gain the sole credit of their subjugation, and threw himself with his portion of the army alone in all haste on the enemy.

It was the common belief that they had been driven from their homes on the North Sea by inundations, but, whatever the cause of their migration, they had been wandering along the Danube for some years warring with the Celtic tribes on either bank.
Their request for land was not granted, and in 109 B.C. they defeated the consul Marcus Junius Silanus in southern Gaul, but did not at once follow up the victory.
In 105 they returned to the attack under their king Boiorix, and favored by the dissensions of the Roman commanders Gnaeus Mallius Maximus and Caepio, defeated them in detail and annihilated their armies at Arausio (Orange).

The same doctrines were preached with more of churchly fervour by Maximus, the Confessor, (580-622).
Maximus represents almost the last speculative activity of the Greek Church, but the influence of the Pseudo-Dionysian writing was transmitted to the West in the ninth century by Erigena, in whose speculative spirit both the scholasticism and the mysticism of the Middle Ages have their rise.
Erigena translated Dionysius into Latin along with the commentaries of Maximus, and his system is essentially based upon theirs.
