  The Sand Worms (Phylum Gnathostomula)
Gnathostomulids are hermaphroditic with only a single ovary.
The eggs leave the body by bursting out through the adults body wall, healing of the adult is quick and there is no larval stage, the egg hatching directly into a small but adult gnathostomulid.
Individuals go through one or more feeding but non-reproductive stages followed by a non-feeding but reproductive stage in their lives, and in some species at least it may take a year to complete a life cycle.

 Phylum Gastrotricha
Gnathostomulids are apparently unselective about where or whom they inject with sperm- since it may be found in the wrong body regions and organs and sterile phase individuals are just as likely to be inseminated as sexually mature ones.
Fertilization is internal, some males use hypodermic insemination, others, like gnathostomulids, have penes that are adhesive and attach to the body wall of a female-which may drag the male around for some time.
The Lansing effect has been found in rotifers (King, 1983), that is that the offspring of old parents tend to have shorter lifespans than the offspring of younger rotifers.

 Limnognathia
The group was first recorded from the Bay of Kiel in Germany, but appears to have a worldwide distribution with the greatest species diversity in tropical coralline sand.
The gnathostomulid body can be divided into a head and a trunk, and in some cases a small offset tail.
All gnathostomulids, except the genus Agnathiella, have a set of jaws and in some cases also an isolated basal plate.

The phylum is characterized by the presence of a pharynx with associated jaws and basal plate.
Gnathostomulids are small, fragile and elongate in structure, rarely exceeding 3mm in size, and usually between 0.5mm and 1mm.

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Bocas del Toro Species Database
The species is easily recognized by its long tail combined with the presence of a broad rostrum (preoral part of head).
The species appear to be the most common gnathostomulid around Bocas del Toro, and it was recorded at several localities.
A single specimen was found in mud with Thalassia from a locality near Almirante, whereas numerous specimens were found in samples from coral sand off Mangrove Inn near Bocas.

The Loom : Tree of Life, c. 2006
The only regret I have is that the metazoa section seems so poorly resolved.
I suppose that's due to the fact that metazoan genomes are longer but I would love to see even a few lophotrocozoa plugged into this, or a chaetognaph or two, or gnathostomulid, or echinoderm, or priapulid.

A basal plate is a characteristic component of the "jaw" mechanism of a gnathostomulid.
It lies within the mouth, anterior to the "jaws" at the entrance to the pharynx.
