  Welwitschia
One very unusual characteristic of the Gnetophyta is that many members possess vessels in their xylem tissue, an angiosperm trait that is not found in most gymnosperms.
Some older references have suggested that the Gnetophyta may represent a "missing link" in the evolution of flowering plants, but others say that vessels and double fertilization are examples of parallel evolution.
Considering all their amazing similarities, it seems quite plausible that the Gnetophyta and angiosperms may have had a common ancestor.

CONFIRMING THE CLASSIFICATION OF THE GNETOPHYTES AS A PHYLUM WITHIN THE SUBKINGDOM GYMNOSPERM
The phylum Gnetophyta is a phylum within the gymnosperms; however, according to Margulis and Schwartz (1999), the Gnetophytes are possible related to the angiosperms through an extinct common ancestor.
The Gnetophyta have seeds with two cotyledons, a feature that is exclusive to the dicotlyedons in the angiosperms and the Ginkophytes in the gymnosperm (Margulis and Schwartz, 1999).
The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between the gnetophytes and the angiosperms and by using cladistic analysis, confirm the classification of the gnetophytes as a phylum within the gymnosperms rather than as a phylum within the angiosperms.
