Like it or not, many newcommers look towards kde and gnome to see if the ports system is usable for them.
Just, in case, this is not flamebait, just what i seem to have noticed - kde and gnome is valuable as "promotion" - wether we like it or not.
What i was thinking was a list of/for the folks that maintained gnome, the list should be named with the same name that we use for maintainer name.

Following Tush's advice to use the Gnome website items as a guide, and using the BLFS CVS 2003-11-26 as a guide, I have an apparrently successful basic Gnome install (Chapter2 31 - 35).
Have logged in, got the usual screensaver messages, Gnome detected my old Gnome and set up the link to it, I ran nautilus successfully.
Am now going to install the other things from the gnome site that are not in the book.

Having finally got gnumeric to build ok with Gnome Basic support, I have now partially tracked down te reason for the seg fault.
The rush at work has hopefully died down a little for the time being, so a weekend free for me. I have been meaning to get along to the Cambridge LUG for some time now and tomorrow may well be the day.
I want to have a look at more stuff to implement in GNOME Basic and I would also like to have a look at the gb plugin in Gnumeric - so I must remember to update my versions from cvs.

He's probably not interested in joining the GNOME Developer Community yet and really just wants productivity from the desktop, although enough educational/marketing material needs to exist here in the user section to enable a later transition to contributor if desired.
GNOME is going to have to commit to depending on links to independent Community sites for certain content or it will have to make it's own individual Project sites (below) under Developer for each topic that is too large to fit here under Developer Resources.
