GnomeMeeting is an open source VoIP and video conferencing application for GNOME.
It is based on the OpenH323 library and primarily uses the H.323 protocol, although support for SIP is in development.
GnomeMeeting was written by Damien Sandras in order to graduate from the Université catholique de Louvain.

Indeed, GnomeMeeting supports H.323 and will soon support SIP (more on this in the next section) whereas many other softphones only support one protocol, which is often SIP.

GnomeMeeting is able to transmit voice, video and text on the internet, and as long as you can see the face of your correspondant, you don't really need emoticons to know his feelings.
GnomeMeeting will then detect the usable devices and will be able to control them (automatically choose the microphone to record, control the volumes, control the brightness, colorness,...).
GnomeMeeting has a lot of options, some of them only really useful for companies, but the general settings make it easy to use for new users.

The Gnomemeeting window consists of a vertical toolbar, the video window and its controls, a chat view and a separate window which shows the server you are currently connected and its users.
A nice addition to Gnomemeeting would be the ability to save as.mpg or other video format your own video or a video chat (you never know if you'll want to leave your will in a video format, or simply to record something and then burn it as VCD and send it to the family).

I fixed a few bugs recently in GnomeMeeting and I improved stability of GnomeMeeting even though many people are convinced it can't be more stable.
GnomeMeeting 0.94 will be released a bit later, the reason is that I added IP Translation.
That works fine, even for multiple GnomeMeeting instances running behind a gateway (whatever the port(s) you are using, the callto URL stays the same).

The purpose is to have GnomeMeeting NG available with SIP and H.323.
GnomeMeeting is a great program but it is not used enough due to an heavy and not efficient registering system based on ldap protocol
GAIM people are not interested in GnomeMeeting and do not want to collaborate, but 2.00 will have a full DBUS interface, so in theory, they could use that DBUS interface to command GnomeMeeting.

Beware that the TV tuner will use whatever channel the tuner was on previously, which is a good reason to use kWinTV or xawtv to change the channel to something appropriate.
Note we have only extensively tested GnomeMeeting using the above hardware-video-capture-card-equipped systems, and are so pleased with the results using a hardware video capture card that we do not plan to go back to the webcam approach (although this is possible within GM).
Also, this format is supposed to allow things such as hyperlinks to activate gnomemeeting automatically and dial a specific number.
