  GNOMONSONG
Well here's a curiosity indeed; released on the Devendra Banhart-curated Gnomonsong label, this is a re-working of Danielle Stech Homsy's second album and is defiantly odd.
Raised in New Mexico by a gay Syrian painter and a Ukranian flamenco dancer, the musician dragged in influences from far and wide which is more than evident on this selection of peculiarities.
Released on folk activist Devandra Banhart’s fledgling Gnomonsong imprint, Jana Hunter’s debut full length is everything you could hope for.

  NOW Magazine, APRIL 13 - 19, 2006
It's now been two years since I first heard Hunter's Farm, CA and I can still hear that creaky fiddle droning behind a whispy voice that could be coming from the bottom of a well.
Since there are no photos of Hunter on the sleeves of her recordings, if she hadn't been the only person in the joint I doubt that I could've picked her out of a crowd.
Although Hunter says she would be happy to release another album with Banhart's Gnomonsong label, don't count on anything new from her in the immediate future.

Rio en Medio: The Bride of Dynamite: Pitchfork Record Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Despite this amassed talent, however, the project belongs entirely to Stech-Homsy, and is centered almost exclusively on her delicate, Vashti-like vocals, a few drifting samples, and her baritone ukulele-- an instrument that sounds considerably less exotic in action than it first might appear.
Stech-Homsy recorded the bulk of this material on her own, with no original intention to release it, and not surprisingly much of it sounds like what used to be quaintly known as a demo tape.
These pieces suggest Stech-Homsy to be well-suited to writing for a larger ensemble, and reports of her further collaborations with Fite sound promising, particularly when contrasted with the halting, hesitant baby steps publicly displayed on The Bride of Dynamite.

Howlin Wuelf Media :: Rio en Medio
Rio en Medio's debut album for Gnomonsong The Bride of Dynamite is an intricate collage of layered vocals, delicately plucked ukulele, ghostly samples and gritty, deconstructed electronics, all performed by Rio.
As fate would have it, Devendra Banhart barged into Casady’s apartment one day while she was playing Rio's music and he fell in love with it, eventually prevailing on her to release it through Gnomonsong.
As she gains momentum, Rio is sure to surprise both herself and her audience, inspiring renewed faith in the power of a song to transform the reality of its listener.

There‘s No Home was recorded at a friend‘s home in Houston, TX known locally as “Feagan House” over the course of two consecutive weeks in September and October of 2006, produced by Jana and featuring her writing, singing and playing most instruments.
In 2004, Jana made her first big splash among fans of distinctive music with her track “Farm, CA” on the Banhart-curated Golden Apples of the Sun collection released by Arthur Magazine’s CD label, Bastet, followed by vinyl-only split release with Devendra Banhart on the Troubleman label.
Late the following year she released her full length debut Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom which was the inaugural release on Gnomonsong, the label founded by Devendra and Vetiver’s Andy Cabic in conjunction with Revolver Distribution.

Sometimes, as long as you don’t stick around for the pet names and furtive caresses, it’s comforting to be in the company of people who care about each other so deeply that they can’t help but assume you’ll care, too.
Jana Hunter is the first artist to release an album on Gnomonsong, the new label founded by Devendra Banhart and Vetiver’s Andy Cabic.
Recorded mostly on two- and four-tracks over the course of a decade, the 13 songs have the quality of field recordings, their lo-fi limitations (mic distortion, tape hiss, random flubs and fumbles) conferring a kind of grubby authenticity on what is, at its core, a rather intellectual enterprise.

Splendid Magazine reviews Jana Hunter: Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom
Jana Hunter would fit right in with Kimya Dawson, The Blow, Old Time Relijun and Mirah, but it's kind of refreshing to discover that she isn't signed to K Records.
It's not clear whether the Gnomonsong label's first release signals a change in the musical climate, or whether label heads Devendra Banhart and Andy (Vetiver) Cabic's own widely publicized musical efforts have inspired a dramatic upswing among risk-taking outsider singer/songwriters.
With any luck, between Gnomonsong's heightened profile and the quality of Hunter's material, Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom will find a broader audience and more artists of Hunter's caliber and fearlessness will follow her path.

The first signee to Devendra Banhart’s Gnomonsong records, Jana Hunter is understandably frequently compared to the perceived leader of the freak folk movement.
The Texas native’s voice often recalls Banhart’s warbling croon, and her plucked guitar lines are another point of comparison.
First featured on a series of compilations, including the Banhart curated Golden Apples of the Sun, Gnomonsong’s first Hunter release was a split with Devendra.

RIO EN MEDIO, The Bride Of Dynamite
This doesn't sound like your typical American album, not in any way whatsoever, there are pockets of influence but 'The Bride of Dynamite' in its subject matter (Europe, love, Iraq, feminity) and overriding style is a different beast.
That's what makes her such an interesting singing for the fledgling Gnomonsong label which up until now has focused on the much more traditional (if that makes sense) end of the New Weird America sound.
A rough diamond, 'The Bride of Dynamite' is the sort of album which takes months to truly understand, and it's the sort of album you'll want to spend months with.

Feathers’ self-titled debut on Gnomonsong, the fledgling label founded by Andy “Vetiver” Cabic and Devendra Banhart, is a study in communal music-making.
In true hippie fashion, the members of Feathers prefer to go by first names only, there’s no obvious frontperson, and the liner notes don’t specify who played or wrote what.

If you bought any record by one of the new folk artists around for the past few years, but you are looking for something more, the Papercuts are for you.
Another new addition to the Gnomonsong label, singer/"ukulelist" Danielle Stech-Homsy (sole member of Rio en Medio) is, understandably, working the psych/freak folk aesthetic -- simply note her label and appearance in Filter magazine as one of Banhart's Top Ten of 2006 picks.
Thus, on the surface her debut album, The Bride of Dynamite, seems to be the product of overarching influences; Andy Cabic, Sierra Casady (CocoRosie), David Coulter, Tim Fite, and Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers) all contribute touches to the record.

Psycho Daisies: To Find Me Gone
Willfully nebulous though it may be, there's probably no current movement more discrete than the quote-unquote "freak folk" Cabic and his more famous friend, Devendra Banhart, have been slowly and steadily bringing to the indie limelight since 2002 or so.
It can be traced to just two record labels (first Michael Gira's Young God Records, and now Cabic's and Banhart's own Gnomonsong imprint) and a small handful of musical influences: British folk, pre-glam Marc Bolan, the Incredible String Band.
But while it would be easy enough to begin this review simply by rattling off Cabic's various indie folk credentials, or perhaps engaging in a side-by-side beard comparison with Devendra, that wouldn't give much of an idea about To Find Me Gone as an album, now would it?
