Xenosaga does frequently pay homage to Xenogears, though, best evident in the name of the main character, Shion Uzuki, and her brother Jin Uzuki is like a spitting image of Citan from Xenogears.
It was during this dark time that the UTIC faction was born, a mysterious sect that seems to be after the original Zohar artifact that was situated on the planet Miltia and which is now lost in the Abyss along with the planet.
Xenosaga also has a 'simulator' option that will allow you to revisit past 'dungeons' which I guess is the closest thing to freedom of exploration you'll get in the game.

Xenosaga has different races as well: the Humans, the Realians (genetically engineered humans made of organic tissues created to fight the Gnosis and treated like a race of substandard automatons with no rights), the Gnosis, Androids like KOS-MOS and Cyborgs (people who had given up on their human life and wanted to become machines).
Xenosaga is highly recommended for the hardcore RPG player but may be a bit too much for those new to the genre.

Xenosaga III is suppose to put closure to the entire storyline but unfortunately there are still some plots that haven't been cleared up while other plots weren't explained clearly enough that gamers can understand.
Xenosaga III soundtrack is pretty much on par with Xenosaga II but not as good as the original Xenosaga.

Xenosaga: Der wille zur macht, a rather well known sci-fi RPG on the Playstation 2, has been jokingly referred to as more of a movie than a game thanks to its lenghty cutscenes rendered lovingly in 3D.
If Xenosaga has one saving grace, then that would be that the acting is generally quite good, with the exception of KOS-MOS' Japanese VA, who nearly shouts all her lines with a rather grating, monotonous voice.
