GnuTLS, the (Large African antelope having a head with horns like an ox and a long tufted tail) GNU Transport Layer Security Library, is a (additional info and facts about free software) free software implementation of the (additional info and facts about SSL and TLS) SSL and TLS protocols.
GnuTLS is primarily licensed under the (additional info and facts about Lesser GPL) Lesser GPL; some parts are licensed under the (additional info and facts about GPL) GPL.
GnuTLS is comparable to (additional info and facts about OpenSSL) OpenSSL, but OpenSSL's license is not compatible with the GPL.

We kept some parts of GNUTLS under the GPL because they are unique, and with the GPL they provide free software projects (which deserve our help) an advantage over non-free projects (which do not deserve our help, since they refuse to share with us).
The GNU Lesser GPL license applies to the main gnutls library, while the gnutls-extra library is under the GPL.
The gnutls library is located in the lib/ directory, while the gnutls-extra library is at libextra/.

Currently the GnuTLS library implements the proposed standards by the IETF's TLS working group.
The core library licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL), thus making it possible to use GnuTLS even in non-free proprietary programs.

In GnuTLS the X.509 certificate structures are handled using the gnutls_x509_crt_t type and the corresponding private keys with the gnutls_x509_privkey_t type.
It is often desirable to check that the version of `gnutls' used is indeed one which fits all requirements.

This is a followup on an old thread where I wanted to replace lisp/gnus/starttls.el with a version that uses GNUTLS instead of the OpenSSL based (and not widely installed) "starttls" tool.
The discussion suggested that it was too drastic, and it should have been backwards compatible instead, i.e.
The code may be buggy, but my point is that in any case the user is not worse of than before, where it would just simply fail when "starttls" was not installed.

Even if GnuTLS is a typical library software, it operates over several security and cryptographic protocols, which require the programmer to make careful and correct usage of them, otherwise he risks to offer just a false sense of security.
For that reason, do not consider a program secure just because it uses GnuTLS; there are several ways to compromise a program or a communication line and GnuTLS only helps with some of them.
Updated versions of the GnuTLS software and this document will be available from http://www.gnutls.org/ and http://www.gnu.org/software/gnutls/.

GnuTLS is an optional, not necessary requirement for the installation of libsoup-2.2.1, according to the BLFS-6.0 book.
Are there any plans to remove these refenences in libsoup to bring it up to date with gnutls?" => From that I can read that libsoup-2.2.1 requires at least a version of gnutls 0.9.7, which is true, according to the output of the configure command on my machine.

Version 1.4.1: - gnulib update - Don't call gnutls_record_send() in the GnuTLS version of tls_puts() when there is no data to send, and properly detect failing tls_puts() and net_puts() calls in smtp_put().
It only gets used when - GNU SASL is not used and - GnuTLS is not used and - OpenSSL is not used and - the C library does not implement MD5.
This was not completely implementable with GnuTLS (since it lacks SSLv2 support afaik) and is unnecessary anyway.

Background ========== GnuTLS is a free TLS 1.0 and SSL 3.0 implementation for the GNU project.
Additionally, a flaw was also found in the RSA key export functionality.
Resolution ========== All GnuTLS users should remove the existing installation and upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --unmerge gnutls # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose net-libs/gnutls Due to small API changes with the previous version, please do the following to ensure your applications are using the latest GnuTLS that you just emerged.

To use this variant, you must have the GnuTLS library installed on your computer, and the compile-time configuration option OPTION_TLS must be set to 1.
Support for GnuTLS was introduced in retawq 0.1.6 and was developed and tested with the - at that time current - GnuTLS version 0.8.9, but you should normally use the most recent version which is available; newer versions of security-related software often fix important security problems.
On the other hand, please note that GnuTLS itself requires certain (sometimes old) versions of other libraries to be installed on your computer and won't work correctly otherwise - read GnuTLS's own documentation.
