Gnucleus was the beginning of a few open-source Gnutella related projects (GWebCache, GnucDNA, GnucNS).
Gnucleus itself is a Windows application for accessing the Gnutella and G2 networks.
Gnucleus is created with the mind set that first time users should be able to open the program and get files immediately.

Gnucleus lets you get more information about who you are connected to and who you are downloading from, again I just want my files.
Gnucleus is supported and open source so you know it will always be available.
As long as Gnucleus continues to be improved (and because it is open source it will always be under devlpoment) it will be the best.

Gnucleus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, Gnucleus is a popular Gnutella client for the Microsoft Windows platform, released under the GPL license.
Gnucleus implements a number of advanced features including Ultrapeers (Gnutella nodes that aggregate an index of files on child nodes to shorten search paths), multisource swarming downloads, SHA1 file hashing, and partial-file sharing.
Recently the development picked up some steam, introducing Tiger tree hashing, proxy server support as well as support for the Gnutella2 network.

 Gnucleus
Gnucleus is the oldest actively maintained Gnutella client as it has been under development for a little over 2 years.
As an open-source client, Gnucleus has a bright future even if the current developers abandon the project.
Gnucleus is a reliable, stable client that offers a fulfilling adventure into the Gnutella network.

Hal Plotkin -- Gnucleus File Sharing Software
The recently improved Gnucleus software is one of several clients such as LimeWire and BearShare that run on the Internet's self-organizing Gnutella network.
The question now is whether artists will continue to allow people to distribute their material over the Internet without any opportunity for payment or whether they will at long last rise up and demand that their record companies start making those songs available online legally and at reasonable prices.
The fact that Gnucleus is open source and Windows based means it runs on most computers and will be available permanently, says John Marshall, the 18-year-old New Hampshire high school student who led a team of about a half-dozen other contributors who created the program.

There is a link to the Gnucleus Forum, an excellent place to learn things from experienced users, and to ask questions.
Though it is loved by the majority of its users, I guess there are a few who just can't handle being that in control of their p2p experience.
If you want to be a lamer and use a dated version of Gnucleus, you can press cancel while it is getting the update (don't be a lamer, let it be happy and install the update).

Run Gnucleus and let Outpost allow you to make a rule for it by choosing the "Other" option when you are prompted to create a rule.
As Watchman pointed out, get a feel for which port range that Gnucleus is trying to use by paying close attention to the connection popups as they appear and be sure to select 'Create Preset Using' Other in the connection popup window.
Modify the rule entries for Gnucleus based on the rules that you found in preset.lst for a similar application.

infoAnarchy || Gnucleus 1.2 released   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A new version of Gnucleus, an open-source Gnutella Client for Windows, has been released.
Gnucleus is a powerful, easy-to-use and small client with many useful features such as multiple searches and "auto-evolving" (auto-updates with possible user-intervention).
Apparently Swabby (author of Gnucleus) plans to separate IP caching and chatting channels, this may be a solution, but redirecting event messages to another Window may be a better fix.

Expressing concern and opposition to the protocol is BearShare, LimeWire, XoloX and Ares (former Gnutella client), while Gnucleus and a large community of users, support the new idea.
Gnucleus, a well respected open source client, has been particularly supportive on this issue.
Gnucleus and any other applications using the DNA would then have the advantage of running both the Gnutella and G2 protocols underneath."

Morpheus is now running an advertising-loaded modified version of Gnucleus, an excellent open-source Gnutella client.
Alas, there's no reason to run the Morpheus variation of Gnucleus -- the user interface has been a bit polished to make it more Napster-like, but the icons are uglier, and the advertising is avoidable.
I had a feeling this would happen, Morpheus was moving in the direction of gnutella and the only reasonable way of getting there quickly was by using established code.

The easiest way of checking this is to initiate a query and count the number of results along each connection.

Gnucleus is searching for alternate sources to get the file you want from.
Gnucleus and the Gnutella/Gnutella2 network use hashes to search for files (as opposed to searching by filename), so to function in the network, Gnucleus needs to know the hashes of the files shared.

John Marshall has just released a new version of his popular Gnutella client Gnucleus (Win32, open source).
Gnucleus' major shortcoming, as compared to the currently very popular XoloX Gnutella client and other popular file sharing networks, is its inability to download files from several hosts simulatenously.
Other than that, Gnucleus has become my preferred Gnutella client.

While much of Gnuclueus' attention has been focused on GnucDNA, which provides a common core for Gnutella clients, the new release should make things interesting again in the Gnutella community.
Keep in mind this is still in early beta release and you'll have to compile it yourself.
It will be a bit of time before it's implemented into Gnucleus and other GnucDNA clients.
