I've had lots of fun hacking, this is mainly due to the other crowd of hackers working on Gnumeric who are really pleasant to code with.
Gnumeric 0.62 has been released a couple of days ago, so I decided to go on a so-called "bug-hunting" spree and found a couple of critical bugs.
Another pending patch is the Gnumeric STF Number Format integration which still needs to be approved by Jody upon his return.

By the way, those who are curious, yes Gnumeric does facilitate handling Open Office (www.openoffice.org) files, along with WK1 and WK2 support, as well as few legacy (as on-date support discontinued) types like applix, plan perfect etc. This would provide relief to a whole gaggle of sysadmins rueing over a possible migration.
Installing Gnumeric is, as usual, a simple matter of downloading the tarballs from the Gnumeric and/or Gnome site, provided the Gnome libraries are up-to-date, the install should not cause much of a hassle.
Gnumeric uses its own charting engine (a part of libgoffice), which led to 'some delay' in the stable release.

You need the source code for Gnumeric since a plugin needs access to header files that are not installed when Gnumeric is installed on your machine.
Not only will you need the source of Gnumeric, but also its gnumeric-config.h file which is generated when you configure the source for building.
If you download the Gnumeric source and simply un-tar it, the resulting top-level directory is the one we need.

Today, Monday November 14th, i received the notification that the patch was accepted and now the code is part of Gnumeric mainstream (see the release notes).
Thanks to all gnumeric community and Jody Goldberg that commited the patch and helped me a lot to solve the problems i have faced.
For now on, to compile Gnumeric on Maemo platform, just download the source code (at this moment, the last stable version is 1.6.1) and configure it with --enable-hildon option.

The help string can simply be omited for now, as I can't find where it shows up inside of Gnumeric anyway, and the final argument is the name of the Python function that the Gnumeric function relates to.
Hopefully, the availablity of an open spreadsheet program such as Gnumeric that's not tied to a single proprietary programming language will encourage people to migrate away from closed data formats such as Excel, and we can all have a wider range of interoperability.
