That is the reason of the GNUPedia project and of the Education section of GNU.
GNUPedia is a project for the development of a free encyclopedia.
GNUPedia IS NOT part of the GNU System (we don't need an encyclopedia on the operating system).

GNUpedia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Immediately upon its creation, GNUPedia was confronted by confusion with the similar-sounding Nupedia project led by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, and controversy over whether this constituted a fork of the efforts to produce a free encyclopedia.
GNUPedia participants frequently expressed concern about the amount of editorial control and bureaucracy involved in contributing to Nupedia.
The GNUPedia project continued to exist, and addressed the naming controversy by changing its name to GNE (an abbreviation for "GNE is Not an Encyclopedia", a recursive acronym similar to that of the GNU project) and by redefining the project as a comprehensive "library of opinions" or "knowledge base".

Nupedia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, Stallman also started the GNUPedia project at the same time, which led to concerns about possible competition between the projects.
One issue for GNUPedia participants was that, in spite of Nupedia's use of a free content license, the extensive formal peer review ran counter to the culture and philosophy of the free software movement.
As a result, GNUPedia never really developed and the threat of competition between the projects was averted.

 GNUPedia - The free encyclopedia
Today, the GNUPedia Project came into being, its goal to develop a free encyclopedia.
Nupedia, which is also distributed under a free license (as far as I can tell), and is written with editorial control, and, perhaps more importantly, largely by academics and scolars in their respective fields (thus being more similar in organization to a regular encyclopedia).
At least the free license will mean that someone can snarf all the content from Gnupedia, collect it on one site (or tarball, or CDROM), reformat it in a useful format (given that people at least use the hypertext capabilities of HTML properly, which I'm not sure they will), and make something that's somewhat useful.

Nupedia had an incredibly bureaucratic editorial process, which led to only 24 articles ever actually completing the review process.
It was also in competition with GNUpedia, a similar project started by the Free Software Foundation, and used primarily by people concerned with Nupedia’s high level of editorial control.

This is exactly what they seek to prevent by doing the damage.
Since there is little or no penalty for GFDL violation, GNU having given up its GNUpedia and failing to enforce the license (one of many problems with free software and open source models), the vandalism proceeds with impunity.
An interesting test of the concept is to see if a member of any sysop power structure will acknowledge that any sysop has ever used any power to do what can be described as vandalism.

During this same time period, Nupedia started as a side project to allow collaboration on articles prior to entering the peer review process.
As grew and attracted contributors, it quickly developed a life of its own and began to function largely independently of Nupedia, although Sanger initially led activity on by virtue of his position as Nupedia editor-in-chief.
Besides aborting the GNUPedia project, also led to the gradual demise of Nupedia.

Looking for a perl monkey - Dev Shed
Hullo, I'm writing this on behalf of a GNU project called GNE (GNE's Not an Encyclopedia), with the purpose of recruiting the help of a perl monkey or two.
After GNU successfully created a base range of Free Software, and initiated a movement that has ensured, at least for the time being, some freedoms in the software world, it has decided to branch out into the world of knowledge as a whole.
One would get involved with GNE rather than the other two simply because one thought GNE was more interesting, or one wanted a bigger role in the programming (as the other two projects have far more programmers, which isn't hard because as it stands GNE has gone down to one - me!).

But I say that there's no need to have two equal projects (Jimmy has made everything to change the original Nupedia idea to the idea of GNUPedia).
Like other open-source projects, Nupedia's license lets anyone use its content for free - as long as the licensee credits Nupedia as the source and allows the site to freely distribute the content.
