Gnutella servents have developed quickly to the point where servents that meet the existing Gnutella 0.4 standard are being pushed to the periphery of the network.
Gnutella 0.6 is has been tested over a 5 month period and currently is being treated as stable by developers.
For developers who have mature clients with appreciative user bases, the current push is to find ways of managing scalability, of minimising corrupt/badly labelled files (we have vandalism online as well) and of providing anonymity.

Gnutella - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Gnutella (pronounced with a silent 'g') is a distributed software project to create a true peer-to-peer file sharing network, without a central server.
The development of the Gnutella protocol is lead nowadays by the GDF (Gnutella Developer Forum).
Gnutella2 (G2) is not supported by the rest of the "old" Gnutella network – except for Gnucleus – and the developers of Gnutella refer to it as "MP" (Mike's Protocol) because it was not approved by the GDF.

Gnutella2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gnutella2 peer-to-peer protocol is a reworking of the Gnutella protocol, written mainly by Michael Stokes.
In November 2002, Michael Stokes announced the Gnutella2 protocol to the Gnutella Developers Forum, which immediately caused a schism among the developers.
While many developers who came after the flame war have proclaimed that this feature makes it much easier to code a client for Gnutella2 than Gnutella, Gnutella developers still maintain that the Generic Gnutella Extension Protocol (GGEP) allows for flexible additions to the Gnutella 0.6 protocol.

 Gnutella vs. Gnutella2
Gnutella developers with a significant share understand this paradox and have designed their clients to be bandwidth friendly.
The Gnutella developers essentially have an open playbook, anyone can look anyone can know what the next move will be and how to counteract that move or how to put that move in their own playbook.
The Gnutella developers cannot sit idly by as a once upstanding Gnutella developer takes it upon himself to introduce a hostile client, hostile marketing and go on to give it the apparent stamp of approval by placing the Gnutella name on a product which was not created, tested and refined by the Gnutella developers community.

BearShare - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
When it comes to gnutella clients and participation in the Gnutella Developers Forum (GDF), BearShare is seen as one of the frontrunners alongside Limewire due to its wide implementation of GDF proposals and stable networking.
There is, though, bad blood between FreePeers and the developer of Shareaza for naming his client's proprietary network gnutella2, without asking or making any note of it in the GDF.
Vincent Falco, main developer of BearShare, has on and off threatened to ban connections to Shareaza clients for this action and other questionable gnutella network behaviour in Shareaza.

Gnutella Developers Forum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The Gnutella Developers Forum (GDF) is an open forum where developers of Gnutella servents discuss changes and extensions of the Gnutella protocol.
It was formed after Nullsoft's original Gnutella website was shut down as a general congregation group for the developers attempting to reverse-engineer Gnutella's protocol.
Since then, it has become a focal point for Gnutella development.

Salon.com Technology | Gnutella bandwidth bandits   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A new Gnutella client called Xolox had recently come onto the network, and in an effort to give Xolox users faster downloads, its programmers had configured the program to frequently "re-query" the network to check for desired files.
Gnutella is fully decentralized, and that, people said, rendered it immune to legal action; in late 2000, when Napster's court-imposed shutdown seemed imminent, it was this promise of Gnutella's invincibility that seemed to sustain most file traders.
But because developers are free to implement their own variations on network standards, this open system can also be seen as the cause of some of Gnutella's performance problems.

The file-trading network's developers are discovering that even their wide-open, free-for-all technology might need a little policing.
Developers at Limewire e-mailed programmers at Qtraxmax, and though they seemed receptive to concerns, "I don't think they quite realize the scope of the problem," Fisk says.
Gnutella is quite vulnerable to being flooded with excessive automated queries, Fisk says.

 Gnutella v. Gnutella2
Calling Shareaza "Gnutella 2" is just a cheap shot and shows the type of selfishness and greed that causes all Gnutella developers to question the real motivation behind this, as it appears nothing more than a blatant attempt of self-promotion with the destructive results of purposely confusing the general public.
Certainly all the Gnutella developers have an incentive to develop a better network, which we feel companies such as LimeWire with their GUESS proposal is well on the way to doing.
We realize that Shareaza's developers are eager to move up with their client instead of waiting what the GDF comes up with and pooling the ideas to make "G2" on its own.

Gnutella was the brainchild of Justin Frankel during his days at Nullsoft (a small sub-division of AOL.) This program was released in mid March of 2000, during the glory days of Napster.
Gnutella is and was a pioneer in the P2P world because of its decentralized nature.
I think Gnutella will have 1,000,000 users by the end of the year, Imesh 5 is, as it seems, going to support Gnutella, some recent tests with a new crawler software at LimeWire shows that they are still undercounting the network by some 100k users and the FastTrack network is dying.

Gnutella spreading itself thin - ZDNet UK News
Predictions that Gnutella would quickly offer an effective file-swapping alternative to Napster, have proven premature, with the technology's own developers admitting more work is needed before it will take off as a way to trade free music and other digital wares.
With Napster hogging the file-sharing spotlight, even as the clock ticks down on its legal status, Gnutella developers are rattling the cage with new releases and the promise of a major upgrade.
Gnutella is perhaps the only major outlaw file-swapping player left standing without being tethered somehow to the Recording Industry Association of America, or some of its members.

Gnutella2 has an extensible binary XML-like packet format which was conceived as an answer for Gnutella's many klugdes, as future network improvements and individual vendor features could be added without worry of causing bugs in other clients on the network.
Gnutella2 employs SHA1 hashes for file identification, to allow for a single file to be reliably downloaded in parallel from multiple sources (swarming), as well as Tiger-Tree hashes to allow for the reliable uploading of parts as the file is being downloaded.

While Gnutella can be used for many things, from document sharing to distributed data and voice streaming, a common use for it is to share files to which the user doesn’t have right.

Slashdot | The Gnutella War: Free vs. Commercial
The reaction from the top commercial clients, Limewire and BearShare, on Gnutella2 (as seen in the GDF and elsewhere) is that they will not support it because of how it was presented, however, Gnucleus (free, open source) plans to support it and feels the GDF is not seeing the bigger picture.
Theworse thing is that the GDF even pay attention to this fellow, they should just igonre him rather than waste their energy on being upset at his lack of manners.
All signs are there that (Gnutella 2) is one strictly commercially driven undertaking/experiment (possibly by a very large company pulling all the strings from behind) and that somebody wants to experiment with his own network attached to one that is already up and functional.

Shortly after the release of Gnutella by America Online employee Justin Frankel, Kan and several friends set up a portal site intended to serve as an information hub for Gnutella developers.
Kan helped write an early version of Gnutella designed to work on the Unix operating system, and he and his partners wanted to help bring together fragmenting efforts to extend the original technology.
After finishing their own version of Gnutella, he and his partners developed a means of turning the technology's file-trading capabilities into a powerful new kind of search engine, dubbed InfraSearch.

It's a decentralized system like Gnutella, but the files are encrypted, meaning that Big Brother can't peek into your computer and see what files your node in the network is making available (in fact, neither can you).
It's also virtually impossible to find out where the origin of a particular bit of data is. As soon as Freenet gets out of the development stages, I expect it to be a much bigger player in the fight against censorship than Gnutella.
I note the attempt to frame the Gnutella debate in terms of child porn, since the protection of profits for large corporations doesn't draw much symp;athy.
