Gnutella2 is a new, more advanced protocol which operates along-side G1, delivering true global searching, more reliability and other powerful features.
Shareaza released a preview of its new version, 1.7, which connects to their newly-designed Gnutella2 network, on Tuesday.
Gnutella2 is the way forward for users who want to see an improvement in results right now, instead of just a vague promise that there will be one somewhere down the line once proper procedures have been followed.

Gnutella2 (G2) is not supported by many of the “old” Gnutella network clients, however many Gnutella2 clients still also connect to Gnutella.
Gnutella2 has an extensible binary XML-like packet format which was conceived as an answer for Gnutella’s many klugdes, as future network improvements and individual vendor features could be added without worry of causing bugs in other clients on the network.
Gnutella2 employs SHA1 hashes for file identification, to allow for a single file to be reliably downloaded in parallel from multiple sources (swarming), as well as Tiger-Tree hashes to allow for the reliable uploading of parts as the file is being downloaded.

  Gnutella2 Information
The Gnutella2 peer-to-peer protocol is a reworking of the Gnutella protocol, written mainly by Michael Stokes.
Gnutella2 (G2) is not supported by many of the "old" Gnutella network clients, however many Gnutella2 clients still also connect to Gnutella.
Gnutella2 also utilizes compression in its network connections to reduce the bandwidth used by the network.

Shareaza Wiki - Gnutella2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Gnutella2 (G2) is a P2P network currently supported in Shareaza.
Gnutella2 is Shareaza's premier P2P network, created and founded by Mike, the developer of Shareaza.
It also has many features no other network has; Gnutella2 can tell you if the file has been reported as fake, low quality or otherwise unusable, it can tell you how stable or busy the host is, and it displays extensive metadata about a file, just by searching.

 Gnutella v. Gnutella2
The hostility that you mention is due to the incompatible protocol that was introduced by Mike and by the abuse of the name Gnutella2.
Not only this but making use of the name Gnutella2 for what is essentially a bridge into the Gnutella network sets a bad precedent for other protocol developers that might like to leach off the Gnutella network.
However, the fact that a new closed protocol is being imposed on the network using the "Gnutella2" name in self-promotion, when previous proposals of the very same nature were already methodically being worked on openly among developers, is what is causing these bad sentiments.

Shareaza is a free Windows—based peer-to-peer client which supports the Gnutella, Gnutella2, EDonkey Network, BitTorrent, FTP and HTTP network protocols and which can handle magnet links, ed2k links, Piolet links, and the now deprecated Gnutella links.
In late 2002, Stokes introduced Gnutella2, a reworked version of Gnutella with many fundamental updates to the protocol, and added support for it to Shareaza.
However, the Gnutella2 network has been doing well so far despite the fact that it was developed privately, and is now supported by Shareaza, MLDonkey, Adagio, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and iMesh among others.

"Gnutella2 is a modern and efficient peer-to-peer network standard and architecture designed to provide a solid foundation for distributed global services such as person to person communication, data location and transfer, and other future services.
The single name "Gnutella2" really refers to two separate components: the Gnutella2 Standard and the Gnutella2 Network.
The Gnutella2 Standard is a set of requirements for building applications which operate on the Gnutella2 network in different capacities.

But Gnutella's developers are promising big things with the Gnutella2 upgrade: it will be easier to use, faster, more scaleable (supposedly up to 20 million users), and will include extras like a distributed computing plug-in (a la SETI@home).
Specifics of Gnutella2's changes were not released, but developers familiar with the Open Source effort guess that it may involve limiting the number of bandwidth-hogging messages that can be sent and including some "super peer" proxying software to keep slow connections from bogging down the entire peer-to-peer network.
To combat the anti-DMCA coalition of programmers, professors, Open Source advocates, free-speech advocates, artists who are against the massive record labels, and others, he hopes to form a group to support the need for digital copyrights and laws that has better a public face than just the RIAA and MPAA.

Even his own MP protocol is a derivative of work of many ideas that lead up to GUESS, with the big difference being that the GUESS specs were discussed openly in the GDF and its specs are available to everyone, while the MP specs are his and his alone.
MP added to Shareaza is simply a means of testing out a new proprietary network and as such should never have entered the Gnutella network.
The Gnutella developers’ community is working on the evolution of Gnutella as we currently know it; we cannot name it Gnutella2 as that name is already taken.

A viable solution for this would be to maintain the IPv4 network, and give out the IPv6 address or URL information through packet extensions.
An IPv6 in the case of Gnutella2 address is 18 bytes bytes long: 16 bytes for the IP address and 2 bytes for a port number as follows: typedef struct { BYTE ip[16]; SHORT port; } IPV6_ENDPOINT; Extensions details for each packet /KHL/NH/IP6 Payload The physical IPv6 node address of the hub.
In this case it is interesting the great flexibility in the Gnutella2 framework allowing for this kind of extensions to be added.

Releasing a new P2P network in and of itself would not prove to be the controversy.
Commercial Gnutella developers, especially BearShare, were outraged that the Gnutella2 domain was snatched from underneath them, along with much of their combined work.
However, Gnutella2 supporters contend that such a move was ultimately necessary in order to save Gnutella2 from commercial P2P development.
