THE IRANIAN: Film review: Spartans, Darius Kadivar
The 300 Spartans - The Lion of Sparta (1962)
The Spartans had a superb army but were not democratic; the fact that they participated in a voting league of cities is the extent of their democracy.
The 300 Spartans gives the opportunity to admire the tactics and fight scenes of the Spartans which is illustrated with panache for the early 60's genre of movie making and the frustrations of the Persians in dealing with the Greeks is felt keenly as the movie moves towards the climax.

Spartans were renowned among the Greeks for their fanatical adherence to their Laws, an austere and standardized mode of life, "laconic" brevity in public speech, intolerance of foreigners and foreign ways, and military prowess.
Being a Spartan meant being both a sturdy warrior and effective manager of Helot labor; the Spartan who flinched in battle or whose kleros failed to produce was ejected from the ranks of citizens.
The heroism of three hundred Spartans at the pass of Thermopylae allowed the Greek army to escape; Sparta's regiment fought to the last man, leaving a laconic epitaph: "Tell the Spartans we died for their Laws." Spartan leadership and hoplites ensured Greek victory in the decisive Battle of Plataea (479).
