Go was and still is widely regarded as a game requiring superior intelligence that everyone from Chinese gentlemen to military generals played to show off their skills and hone their military tactics and strategy.
Go was even considered one of the “Four Accomplishments” (brush painting, poetry, and music being the other three) that distinguished a gentleman in Chinese society (“A Very Brief History of Go”).
Go is a game that is similar in many respects to chess, but yet, it transcends the game of chess in many ways.

In China around 400 CE, Go was called *”Shudan,”* which also means “hand talk” or “hand discussion,” suggesting that the game is a silent negotiation for control of territory, with the placing of stones instead of verbal exchange.
Joseki is a Nipponese word that means “settled moves.” Since Go has been actively played for the last 4 and a half millennia, it’s understandable that a lot of thought has gone into sequences of moves that may be common.
Of course, you are not required in any way to follow through with a joseki sequence, but you must keep in mind that dozens of millions of minds have analyzed joseki and they are in general bulletproof.

 Sensei's Library: Joseki Popularity
I am certain some do, consider the case where a joseki becomes popular and is then discredited, there must be a resurgence of the joseki it had displaced.
Certainly some sequences that were considered joseki have been discredited and hence aren't played by professionals (and some of these are recommended in the English version of Ishida's dictionary).
We have to make the best moves we can and when we are at a stage of go development where we can appreciate why moves in a joseki are made then we should study them to develop a sense of what is an equal result in various corner situations.

Joseki - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A joseki (定石), literally meaning "set stones", as in "set pattern" (jo means "fixed" or "set", and seki means stones), is a sequences of moves in game of Go which results in a fair outcome for both fl and white sides.
A joseki may fall out of use for various reasons, some of which may often seem minor to the amateur player, and professionals may consider one variation suboptimal for a very specific reason —one which strong amateurs are not likely to exploit.
While some claim that studying joseki is an important part of developing one's strength as a player, more regard the study of Life and death to be more important.

In go it is often said that only amatuers memorise joseki, and that pro's just work them out as they play.
The biggest argument against simply repeating sequences in Go is as Go Seigen put it in the preface(?) to a recent book...
Thus Joseki should be played with an understanding of the moves involved and their impact on the whole board.

 Master's Theses Ideas
Though the majority of a go game tends to be strategic (definition: what you do when there is nothing to do), ultimately a game is won or lost by tactics (definition: what you do when there is something to do).
Tactical situations in go tend to be local and so a go playing program must be able to recognize these situations and restrict its attention accordingly.
Such a function for a go playing program must center on the concepts of life and death but must include other factors such as whether a group can escape into the center, how nearly alive or dead it is, etc. The student will study various evaluation functions and prove via implementations which is the best.
