Journalism.org - Journalism Tools: Ethics & Issues - Covering News in Wartime - Understanding Military Rank   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
To attain the supreme rank as a four-star general the odds tighten again to slightly more than one in four, with 11 four-star general slots for which those 38 Lieutenant Generals compete.
Footnote: Officers who go on to become 3- and 4-star admirals and generals are not selected by promotion boards, but instead are recommended for promotion either by committees composed of their service's senior 3- and 4-star counterparts, or by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff or even the secretary of defense and president.
There is one unavoidable source of confusion for those encountering the military rank structure for the first time: The commonality of specific terms employed for different ranks, and the use of the same title for different ranks in different military services.

Ranking, or the ordering of returned results according to some criteria, was where the action should have been.
While the broad outlines of these additional variables are easily discerned by webmasters who study how to improve the ranking of their websites, the actual details of all algorithms are considered trade secrets by Google, Inc. It's in Google's interest to make it as difficult as possible for webmasters to cheat on their rankings.

Pagerank Explained. Google's PageRank and how to make the most of it.
We are going to look at some example calculations to see how a site's PageRank can be manipulated, but before doing that, I need to point out that a page will be included in the Google index only if one or more pages on the web link to it.
For the examples, we are going to ignore that fact, mainly because other 'Pagerank Explained' type documents ignore it in the calculations, and it might be confusing when comparing documents.
The results shown in Example 1 (right diag.) are wrong because page B has no links going from it, and so the link from page A to page B is dangling and would be removed from the calculations.

National, State, and Provincial Conservation Status Rank Definitions
A subnational rank, however, cannot imply that the species or community is more secure at the state/province level than it is nationally or globally (i.e., a rank of G1S3 cannot occur), and similarly, a national rank cannot exceed the global rank.
Subnational ranks are assigned and maintained by state or provincial natural heritage programs and conservation data centers.
The NH or SH rank is reserved for species or communities for which some effort has been made to relocate occurrences, rather than simply using this status for all elements not known from verified extant occurrences.

 Alexa Web Search
The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach).
The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users).
It is important to note that the traffic rankings shown on the Movers and Shakers page are weekly traffic rankings; they are not the same as the three-month average traffic rankings shown in the other Alexa services and are not the same as the reach numbers used to generate the list.
