		Goalkeeper is a Dutch close-in weapon system, the purpose of which is to defend a ship against incoming missiles and ballistic shells.
		Goalkeeper's projectiles are much larger (30 mm versus 20 mm) and have greater kinetic energy.
		Goalkeeper is twice as expensive as the Phalanx.

		The RN eventually determined that both Goalkeeper and Phalanx were inadequate as point defense anti-missile systems and has been shopping around for a replacement capability with varying levels of enthusiasm.
		I would understand this with Goalkeeper as I've heard the ship needs to be designed with Goalkeeper in mind, as a large part of it, but I have heard that Phalanx can simply be welded onto the deck.
		The lesson of the threat from sea skimming missiles was remedied by enhancing the existing Sea Wolf Air Defence fit with Goalkeeper CIWS and improving surface to surface capabilities by replacing the Exocet with Harpoon which has double the range.

		They are differerent CIWS though, one is not a simplified version of the other.
		In the Phalanx-1B CIWS, a FLIR is added to the complex and hence the system is developed with surface engagment ability.
		Now, if it were me developing a CIWS that my own navy didn't want and for which I had yet to find a customer, I would want to keep my development costs down.

		Millenium gun actually seems to be very promising, with 1000rnds/min with AHEAD ammunition, with is supposed to be at least the equivalent of the Phalanx (35mm rounds breaking into a large number of fragments) for anti-missile purposes.
		I have a hunch that if HMS Coventry had all the crew served 20mm stuff and Phalanx that was later fitted to the Type 42 she would probably survived the attack by the Argentine A4 with dumb bombs.
		I suspect that the 100mm does have a limited CIWS role, though I suspect it is not quite as effective as the Oto 76mm for that, probably in part due to the very widespread use of the Oto guns.

		It looks very much like the Goalkeeper, except that the goalkeeper also has a scanning radar next to the tracking radar (the chinese only has a tracking radar, scanning radar is probably mounted on a second support vehicle)
		It is likely that the 30 mm weapon system was originally developed for ship-based applications and is very similar to the Dutch Goalkeeper CIWS, which is also armed with a 30 mm seven-barrelled cannon and is in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy and a number of other countries.
		As part of an overall layered air-defence system, SAMs would be used to engage targets at longer ranges while the CIWS would engage close-in targets, especially smaller targets such as air-launched missiles and cruise missiles, which can be difficult to neutralise with some current air-defence systems.

		Actually, it is not unlikely that the Goalkeeper would be able to achieve at least the same performance as the Phalanx Block 1B under similar circumstances.
		The Goalkeeper's search radar (I-band) and track radar (I&K-band) are as good (if not better) than those used on the Phalanx Block 1B (Ku-band digital MTI for search and Ku-band pulse Doppler monopulse for track).

		Actually I believe there supposed to be Phalanx CIWS because that's what the look like.
		To add, the Phalanx CIWS is not manualy operated, it does have an operator but they only control the systems options.
		I would love to see EA make the Phalanx realistic, if it is able to destroy a missile just imagine the damage it would do to an aircraft thats 15x bigger.
