Goaltenders' Glossary (Doug Norris' Goaltender Home Page)
The goaltender should remain relaxed and skate backwards with the incoming shot, thus helping to absorb the blow and reduce the rebound effect.
In fact, the goaltender must be one of the best technical skaters on the team, and must be able to keep up with the moves of every skater on opposing teams.
Stacking the pads is a desperation move in which the goaltender jumps feet-first towards the potential shooter, attempting to cover as much space as possible.

Like defenseman, the goaltender must be knowledgeable of his team's "system" and have a sense of where where his defense and forwards setup within that system.
The goaltender should communicate with his teammates that he is going to take control of the puck from an oncoming teammate or make the teammate aware of his intentions to pass the puck to them.
By talking with teammates, the goaltender decreases chances of a miscommunication and allows them to either get in position for a pass or cover for the goaltender as he sets up a play.

TRAPPER: Worn on the left hand (for right-handed goaltenders), and similar in shape to a fielder's mitt in baseball, the trapper is usually the goaltender's strong point.

Oilers Undecided on Starting Goaltender - The Deadbolt
When it comes to Stanley Cup playoff hockey anything can happen and for the Edmonton Oilers the worse case scenario played itself out on the ice Monday night as goaltender Dwayne Roloson was injured in the third period of last night's 5-4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
With the game tied 4-4 and 5:54 remaining on the clock, Dwayne Roloson was forced from the ice in the third period after Oilers teammate Marc-Andre Bergeron lead Carolina Hurricanes forward Andrew Ladd toward the net, a seemingly average play that saw Roloson twist his knee against the post while in the butterfly position.
As well, pundits and odds-makers also gave the early edge to the Carolina Hurricanes due to the fact that the team had stronger goaltending with 22 year old Cam Ward and original playoff starter for the Hurricanes, Martin Gerber.

Their offense is potent but their defence is too slow and their goaltending situation is dicey (however, i think Nittimaki is the guy for the Flyers and that will make itself obvious in the coming months).
