Professor Peter Nazareth points out that that Goans have written in thirteen languages, of which the chief were English, Portuguese, Marathi and Konkani, the last of these, the mother tongue, being written in four to five different scripts.

This feeling of a permanent migration flow in Goan society is registered in a poem by Santan Rodrigues called, precisely, “Luis de Camoens” (Goan Reader,102) since the Portuguese poet was himself an exile in Goa where he wrote part of the most famous poem in the Portuguese language.
Another reason for the continuation of this diaspora might be the fact that though Goans have a homeland that is politically independent and in which their culture predominates and flourishes, the economic conditions are not good enough, leading many of them to emigrate to more attractive diaspora spaces.
