As well as Auckland, the North Island has two more of New Zealand's four main cities, Wellington which is the capital (and the southernmost national capital in the world), and Hamilton a little south of Auckland which isn't on this map because it's not much of a tourist destination.
New Zealand doesn't have fireflies but it does have glow-worms, light-emitting larvae which live inside caves or forest grottos, dangling sticky threads from the ceiling to catch flying insects attracted to the light.
As far as wildlife is concerned, New Zealand was a paradise for birds before humans arrived, unfortunately many of them were wiped out either directly or by the animals which were brought into the country, and many of the rest are nocturnal like the national bird the kiwi, making them difficult to see.

(An original suggestion that they are the descendants of goats released in New Zealand in the eighteenth century by James Cook, has now been disproved by historic research.) Left on Arapawa island to breed as a future source of food and milk by explorers, the goats came under seige in the 1970's.
A number of Arapawa goats have been removed from the island over recent years and are now being bred by a few enthusiasts in various places throughout New Zealand.

The appropriately named Kiko goat was purpose-bred in New Zealand for meat production – the Maori word “kiko” meaning flesh or meat.
The developers of the breed were Garrick and Anne Batten of Nelson in the northern South Island, and they developed the Kiko from feral goats that had been liberated or had escaped over the last hundred years or so of European settlement.
These feral goats could be found in many places throughout the country, and although they were hardy, they were relatively small and produced little meat or milk.

Good news was that it was near the Langkawi Cable car, sets you back a fiver for two to have an amazing view from the top and a nice walk across the suspension bridge.
Unfortunately they weren't as playful as off Goat Island, so no summersaults or head butts, but it is beyond describing in words what it feels like to be swimming with these creatures so close around you.
Needless to say we are not seasoned campers but have enrolled in the crash course and as such the new oil lamp lasted three days of frustration and smelling up the van, so we have switched to a remote controlled camping light and bought some waterproofs for glacial hiking in the process in downtown Rotorua.

This is a world-renowned spot where a group of dedicated enthusiasts have returned the island to it's natural state by planting native plants and removing introduced vermin.
As we approached Little Barrier Island I was amazed to see a 10-15m whale surface a few metres from the boat, Karen explained that it was a Bryde's Whale which were commonly seen in the area but seldom as inquisitive as this one seemed to be.
So ended another great trip, despite all the ecological problems that New Zealand faces, there are still great birding opportunities there, and it is inspiring to see the efforts that volunteers are doing to return that countries environment back to it's former glory.
